Overview

Program Coordinator and Learning Communities Specialist (PC/LCS) is responsible for developing and maintaining an atmosphere that promotes residential communities through excellence in academic integration and personal development opportunities for students. The PC/LCS role will provide, coordinate, implement and administer major services, programs, and activities in support of a residentially based learning community The PC/LCS will adhere to, administer, and enforce policies and procedures as outlined in the Residential Life Student Staff Manual, the Residential Code of Conduct, Claflin University Campus Code of Conduct, Personnel Policies and Procedures, and the University policies applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students.

 

Program Coordinator and Learning Communities Specialist's role is to connect with the members of the residential community as well as support programs, as directed by the Areas Coordinators and residential staff, The PC/LCS will manage the residential staff that will engage students through one-on-one conversations, community meetings, programs that target the needs of the community and will serves as a resource to both residents and staffwhile upholding the goals and policies of Residential Life. Duties will include planning and facilitating events and programs; fostering student leadership; serving as a liaison between the Learning Community and other University departments and community organizations; assisting with marketing; and supervising work-study students. Provide higher-level administrative support for the Learning Community and work with students, faculty, and staff to foster an environment in which students are healthy, engaged, and successful.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Academic and Co-Curricular Programming

Program Coordinator and Learning Communities Specialist enhances the partnership between University Housing and Academic Affairs where students are able to live with other students who share an academic interest, take courses directly associated with the academic interest area, and participate in co-curricular programming to further connect students to faculty and staff and opportunities to explore their majors/career paths. The PC/LCS is supporting a wide array of co-curricular programming while working with faculty, staff, and students who work with Learning Communities. This position will oversee the day-to-day logistics behind faculty co-curricular programming, directly work with Learning Community sponsors and mentors, coordinate the hiring and training of student staff, assist with recruitment efforts, and support other large scale programs and initiatives within the Learning Community program. Plan and facilitate programs/projects and learning community events, frequently in collaboration with other LCS and organizations. Support the residential life team to include: Program Director, Faculty Director/Associate, Area Coordinators, Assistant Residence Directors, Office Manager/Assistant). Work closely with RA and Learning Community student staff, student leaders and student residents in their efforts to develop programs and events that promote an environment in which students are healthy, engaged, and successful.

 

Student Learning and Leadership

Foster, support and encourage student learning, engagement, and leadership through programming initiatives within the Learning Community. Develop opportunities for upper-level students to mentor new students. Conduct sessions to assist First Year Experience student's seminar that is associated with various Learning Communities. Participate in weekly team meetings and departmentall divisional meetings as required.

 

Marketing and Communication

Ensure systems for informing students and the greater community about activities through social media, calendars, and flyers. Create marketing materials to announce events and programs to community members. Participate in events designed to market, recruit, and retain Learning Community students while building communities through strategic communications.

 

Collaboration

Serve as a liaison with other Learning Communities and other campus and community organizations on special projects and joint initiatives. Coordinate, organize and plan collaborative events and programs. Develop relationships with other departments and community partners to identify and/or facilitate educational, cultural, service, and social opportunities for students. Attend weekly staff meetings, as well as departmental and divisional meetings as required. Serve on departmental working groups and committees as required.

 

Supervision

Supervise work-study students and provide shared functional supervision to Resident Advisors and Area Coordinators regarding programming. Provide higher-level administrative support for programming to the learning community.

 

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree plus 2-5 years' experience with educational programming.
  • Applicant witl have demonstrated experience utilizing interpersonal, written and [oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals both internal and external to the organization.
  • Organized and able to handle multiple projects at once; and computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated experience in event planning, programming organization, or similar.
  •  Experience hiring, training, and supervising students.
  • Creating residential environments that do not simply complement the academic mission but is viewed as an integral and significant part of the entire educational experience in which students are healthy, engaged, and successful.
