Junior/Assistant Specialist - The Hsu Lab
The Hsu Laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering and Innovative Genomics Institute at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Jr/Assistant Specialist in the area of Genome Engineering. We are looking for a passionate and scientifically motivated person with the ability to learn new skills and concepts quickly under personal guidance, and then execute and troubleshoot experiments. Our research aims to understand and manipulate the genetic circuits that control brain and immune cell function to improve human health. To do this, our group draws from a palette of technologies including CRISPR-Cas, engineered viruses, genome sequencing, massively parallel reporter assays, and pooled genetic screens. Projects in the lab include developing new genome editing modalities, CRISPR detection of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, and high-throughput genetic screens.
Appointment Length:
This is a full time position at 100% time for one year. The appointment may be renewed depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is April 2021.
Duties of Position Include:
  • The Jr/Assistant Specialist will work as part of an NIH-funded team to invent molecular technologies for genome editing and nucleic acid detection, working primarily in the areas of molecular and cell biology, protein biochemistry/engineering, and next-generation sequencing. The project aims to enable new approaches for gene and cell-based therapeutics and nucleic acid detection, e.g. for COVID-19.
  • This position performs a variety of techniques in molecular and cellular biology including cloning, cell culture, flow cytometry, preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries, analytical techniques such as qRT-PCR, and biochemical techniques such as protein purification.

  • The Jr/Assistant Specialist will also have laboratory management duties, such as purchasing equipment and reagents.
    Minimum Basic Qualifications:
    Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program or equivalent international degree at time of application
    Additional Qualification:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree by start date.
    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working in research laboratories in the areas of molecular and cellular biology
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques including PCR, electrophoresis, Gibson and Golden Gate cloning, qRT-PCR
  • Experience culturing and manipulating human cells, ideally stem cells
  • Experience with preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries for Illumina sequencing
  • Experience with flow cytometry
  • Strong organizational and record keeping skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    Salary
    The full-time annual salary will be commensurate with experience
    $44,500 - $57,800 annually

    This position is covered by the UC-UAW collective bargaining agreement for Academic Researchers.
