Position Information

This is a full-time, temporary position.

** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional weekend and after hours work.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The salary range for this classification is: minimum $4,304 - maximum $6,120 monthly.

Major Duties

Under the supervision of the Director of University Advisement Center, the incumbent provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures and graduation requirements to lower division, undergraduate, college specific population (new transfers and first year students) by utilizing an advanced, developmental, problem solving approach, rather than a prescriptive application, to support student in retention, closing the achievement gap, and degree completion. Additionally, the incumbent manages and advises a college based pre-major caseload of students, provides significant and frequent advising opportunities, makes decisions in individual cases to resolve student problem within established parameters, regulations, and guidelines, tracking each student cohort thereafter to ensure efficient degree completion. The GE Advisor/First Year Specialist develops, implements, and supports the daily delivery of services to participants and is responsible for the maintenance of assigned participant records, evaluation of assigned participant activities, and preparation of reports related to assigned participants.

Furthermore, the incumbent will collaborate with other UAC advisors and faculty to plan, organization, and coordinate college based interactive workshops specifically designed to support freshmen and sophomore cohorts; administer evaluations to each student to ensure Student Advising Learning Outcomes are achieved; implement evidence based, best practice interventions to promote student personal, professional, and academic success; collaborate closely with Retention Specialists to address identified student challenges, using a preventative approach in documenting and solving problems impacting retention; maintain a daily database of student supported challenges experienced, and overall outcomes; in collaboration with the College Specialist present information to the Director of University Advisement weekly. The College Specialist will periodically serve as Center Liaison/Representative at community and campus events, which will include developing and personally delivering information to various university programs designed to enhance student growth and development.

Qualifications

Required Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Required Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

General knowledge of:
- Basic principles of individuals and group behaviors;
- Research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting information;
- Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing;
- Familiarity with organizational structures and personnel issues.

Ability to
- Work with a variety of professional staff, faculty, and students to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions;
- Carry out day-today assignment without immediate directions.
- Independently plan work, take action, and assist students in solving problems.
- Use advanced statistics and research methods to collect, records, and interpret data as it relates to the UAC, advising methods, and the student population;
- Use judgment within the area of their expertise to creatively utilize existing procedures and to recommend solutions to problems for which precedents may not exist;
- Design, establish, and sustain new programs or initiatives.
- Use a personal computer to develop and maintain files.
- Utilize PeopleSoft information systems to evaluate student success and/or roadblocks.
- Utilize computer based and interview information to accurately advise students.
- Utilize advising contracts and petitions;
- Analyze and address complex academic needs of students.
- Work with a culturally diverse student population as well as awareness of the needs of under-represented, non-traditional, and other student groups.

Classroom presentation experience with fairly large groups of young adults; experience in training others; excellent critical thinking skills, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Certification: Valid Drivers License

Responsibilities

40% - Advising

Provides academic advisement and information on University policies, procedures, and graduation requirements to the freshmen, sophomore, undergraduate, college specific population by utilizing an advanced, developmental, intrusive, problem solving approach, rather than a prescriptive application, to assist students in degree completion. Supports a caseload of lower division, undergraduate scholars by providing clear action steps for degree completion.

35% - Collaborations

Collaborates with departments and faculty to plan, organize, and coordinate college based interactive workshops specifically designed to support freshmen and sophomores. Collaborates with Retention Specialist on workshops, retention initiatives by mapping out communications, outreach and follow-ups. Coordinate College Knowledge with ETE/EOP advising homes and Summer Transfer Program with GE advisor for special populations. Coordinate Summer Bridge for first year/first time (freshmen/transfers) with ETE/EOP advising homes and GE advisor for special populations.

20% - Retention Initiatives

Collaborates as a team member in the delivery of all New Student Orientation, Transfer Student advising, student retention initiatives, and academic success workshops. Supports students in pursuing their educational goals by providing related student aptitudes, interests, and abilities. Partners with Faculty Directors for First Year Experience and Transfer Student Experience and Institute for Career Readiness to support UNV 101 and 395 enrollment and student engagement.

5% - Other duties as assigned.
