Job Details

The Instructional Designer works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to design and develop course instructional materials and interactions suitable for distribution via digital mediums. The Instructional Designer provides technical support and training to faculty, staff, and students for online and hybrid course design and delivery, and assists with training and use of various tools, such as real-time collaboration tools and lecture capture software. The Instructional Designer provides general and personalized support to all College community members in the areas of online instruction and use of the Learning Management System (LMS).
 

Must submit a portfolio along with résumé. The portfolio should be a .pdf file or a link to a website. The portfolio should contain examples of course designs, module designs, instructional materials, video and graphic designs, and other related material all created by the applicant.

Examples of Duties:

  1. Collaborates with faculty in the development of new courses and the adaptation of existing courses for the online and hybrid environment.
  2. Ensures courses meet accepted standards for course design (Online Learning Consortium, Quality Matters, etc.)
  3. Conducts research to identify potential new and emerging technologies, applications, and strategies related to the implementation of instructional technologies and materials and makes recommendations.
  4. Produces robust learning materials in a variety of formats, including text, graphics, audio, video, lecture capture, animations, and simulations that adhere to copyright guidelines and ADA requirements and support teaching, learning, and college information needs.
  5. Coordinates with the College’s Reference Librarians to ensure electronic library resources and information are implemented into online courses, with a focus on Open Education Resources.
  6. Designs and develops engaging, interactive, and instructionally sound materials that are functional, informative, interactive, mobile responsive, and that address various learning styles.
  7. Coordinates with other staff on campus in production of online materials.
  8. Performs services for faculty including converting documents to web formats, scanning documents, populating question databases, customizing gradebook calculations, and other multimedia and Learning Management System related requests.
  9. Conducts group, one-on-one, and online instruction for faculty professional development on the use of educational tools and effective use of the Learning Management System, in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).
  10. Advises faculty on creating content that follows federal guidelines for accessibility.
  11. Develops documentation and training materials.
  12. Recommends the appropriate tools, media, and teaching strategies to meet course goals, objectives, and outcomes, assisting with the identification, selection, and application of appropriate assessment tools and strategies needed by faculty.
  13. Trains online faculty in the use of applications so that they can create additional course materials as needed.
  14. Provides support for all eLearning products and services. Support may include but is not limited to the following: using the College’s ticketing software, answering and initiating calls and emails, troubleshooting technical problems, training students, faculty, and staff.
  15. Creates and updates knowledge-based articles related to online course design and development, technical support of online and hybrid courses, and other relevant material.
  16. Performs some system administration of the learning management system, including creating courses, adding course content, copying and archiving course materials, and managing LMS enrollment.
  17. Performs quality assurance checks during LMS upgrades and introduction of new functionality.
  18. Assists in researching, developing, and documenting procedures, online course operations, and technology policies.
  19. Conducts online course checks before and during delivery to ensure Best Practices are being me.
  20. Provides training for the ethical use of digital content in all course delivery formats.
  21. Maintains the quality, accuracy, rigor, and effectiveness of instructional materials in accordance with the university’s online course standards, outcomes assessment, faculty reviews, and student feedback.
  22. Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, multimedia design, instructional technology, or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with online course content/material development, learning management systems, or other related experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with students and faculty in a higher education setting related to distance learning.
  • Minimum of two (2) years administration or teaching experience using an LMS. Blackboard Learn preferred
  • Personal Broadband internet connection
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with prospective and current students, staff, faculty, administration, and colleagues and community partners in large and small settings. 
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff and a commitment to a student-centered environment.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, multimedia design, instructional technology, or related field.
  • Experience with tools such as blogs, podcasts, wikis, video-conferencing software, and collaboration apps such as Office 365.
  • Solid understanding of web usability and accessibility requirements.
  • Experience leading and managing projects, and working effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Knowledge in graphic design.
  • Knowledge in video production.
  • Knowledge of UDL.
