Assistant/Associate Professor of Music Education
STARTING DATE: August 2021
WAGE: salaried with benefits, initial 1 year term contract
RESPONSIBILITIES: Take leadership of Concordia's Pre-Teacher Certification concentration for music majors, serving as the Music Department representative in interfacing with the School of Education and building lasting relationships with quality mentor teachers at local schools who can mentor our student teachers in music. Oversee curriculum for music education, advise music education students, guide them toward CSET passage, teach music education classes. Ensemble leadership in the candidate's area of expertise will probably be available. Teaching ability in aural skills, music technology, and/or music cultures is also desired. Responsibilities will include teaching introductory and/or upper-division courses, conducting office hours, and working with full-time faculty colleagues as a cooperative, exemplary university.
Additional participation as an undergraduate student research advisor is possible.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Music Department prefers to hire a leader who has established a well-known reputation as a top music educator in the Southern California region or within the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The candidate will utilize that reputation to draw quality students into the program and to build new strong relationships with local teachers. An earned doctorate or progress toward a doctoral degree program is desired.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Concordia University Irvine offers an excellent liberal arts education in the Lutheran tradition for approximately 4500 students, 1300 of whom are traditional undergraduates. The Department of Music, with app. 60 music majors and 100 non-majors involved in performance ensembles, has app. 30 faculty members (full and part time). This professorship will be the fifth member of a team of full-time music faculty at the university. Music majors may earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music with optional concentrations in church music, music education, commercial music, composition, or performance. There is strong potential for significant growth in the coming years, as a new music building opened in 2019. Plans for an $11 million remodel of the CU Center for Worship and the Arts and a $6 million outdoor performance venue are underway. Music ensembles perform in Segerstrom Concert Hall for Christmas and other major halls on tours. An annual PBS Christmas special airs throughout Southern California and is likely to expand to affiliates across the U.S. soon. Concordia has a wind orchestra, symphony orchestra, jazz ensembles, chamber ensembles, Americana Ensemble, Commercial Music Ensemble, choirs, handbell groups, and several worship bands. Students may study any standard orchestral or church instrument with superior professional faculty performers.
