Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, 1-year temporary contract faculty member in the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program commencing with the 2021 Fall Semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Speech-Language Pathology. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals through the work of Speech-Language Pathology.

Student-centered activities that support OCC’s mission include campus-wide student success projects funded by the Office of Student Equity; partnerships with local Hispanic Serving four-year institutions; active programs that work to improve the academic achievement of racially minoritized students, such as PUENTE and UMOJA; Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS).
The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program will provide the community with professionally trained personnel to assist the speech pathologist in this specialized field and to provide services in multiple settings to a diverse population in the administration of therapeutic and screening services. Speech-Language Pathology Assistants work directly with clients or patients to conduct screenings for speech, hearing, or language disorders. They are in direct patient/client contact providing therapeutic treatment, assistance, and documentation of progress. Assistants work closely with the pathologist to make changes in the treatment protocol as the patient improves. Graduates of the program are eligible for State licensure through the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Speech-Language Pathology, and Audiology Board.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide instruction in the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program in accordance with established course outlines.
• Provide leadership in the development and revision of the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program curriculum responsive to the students served.
• Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
• Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
• Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
• Ensure and maintain compliance with the program to accreditation standards. Includes communication and preparation of reports with appropriate agencies as well as the district and college administration.
• Oversees program administration, student recruitment, admission and advising, budgetary assessment, planning, and preparation.
• Responsible for curriculum according to National standards, State and local regulations-course development, updates, planning, revising, implementation, evaluation.
• Conduct ongoing program evaluation and program review.
• Maintains current knowledge of the professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development.
• The assignment may include recommendations of clinical affiliations and the assurance of the instructional quality of clinical education by regular visits to clinical education centers.
• Coordinate the scheduling of classes, including the recommendation of adjunct assignments to department IUA and Division Dean.
• Communicate with state and national professional associations.
• Work cooperatively toward mutual goals with other program coordinators and with the School of Allied Health Professions Faculty.
• Recommend the purchase of equipment and supplies and coordinate repair of lab equipment to assure program quality.
• Develop instructional innovations to ensure program success.
• Assist with program outreach, including publicity, community relations, advisory committee membership and meetings, external funding opportunities, and campus events.
The assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.
Qualifications and Physical Demands
• Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (2):
• Master's in speech pathology, speech-language pathology, speech-language, and hearing sciences, communicative disorders, communicative disorders and sciences, communication sciences and disorders or education with a concentration in speech pathology;
OR, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the above. • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
• Ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.
• Ability to complement existing staff, student, and community demographics in terms of professional and personal skills.
Licenses and Certificates:
• A certificate of Clinical Competence is required: (The speech-language pathology assistant must be supervised by a speech-language pathologist who holds a Certification of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology for ASHA, has state licensure (where applicable), who has an active interest and wants to use support personnel, and who has practiced speech-language pathology for at least 2 years following ASHA certification)
• Successful full or part-time teaching experience in a higher education setting with educational skills in curriculum development, various instructional methodologies, and evaluation and assessment.
• Demonstrated active involvement in professional organizations such as ASHA and CaSHA.
• Experience in culturally diverse populations.
• Qualified to teach in an associate discipline such as English as a second language, Early Childhood Education, and/or Speech.
• Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Speech-Language Pathology shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
• Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
• Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.
• Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Speech-Language Pathology, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Speech-Language Pathology to students’ lives, interests, and communities.
• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program courses and classrooms.
• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
• Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).
• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Conditions of Employment
For a full-time, temporary, 1-year contract, position a maximum starting range of $54,626 to $90,403 is offered, based on the 2020-2021 salary schedule of $54,626 to $130,233. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,186 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.
Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
