The Institute for Engagement & Negotiation (IEN) is eager to hire a part-time Training Programs Manager for one of our flagship projects – the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute (VNRLI). The IEN is a nationally recognized leader in fostering collaborative change across a broad range of issues through multi-agency and multi-stakeholder processes as well as through community outreach and engagement. Through its 40-year history, IEN has a deep history with developing, fostering and facilitating environmental and conservation collaboratives, as well as conducting research into the nature of collaboration and developing recommendations for collaborative approaches. Now entering its 21st year, VNRLI is a yearlong series of three-day workshops that reflect the highest level of professionalism and sensitivity to participant needs, including attention to issues of race, systemic racism, and equity.

The Training Programs Manager will work with people from all sectors and walks of life – corporate, small business, government, nonprofit, academic, and grassroots organizations, and will have skills at managing budgets of $200,000 or more. This position be responsible for managing the core activities of the VNRLI, including the VNRLI Alumni Network, as well as other IEN training initiatives. A key aspect of this position is that it will be working with the core faculty team in designing and implementing the VNRLI and other training initiatives, develop training marketing materials., and conduct marketing and recruitment as well as help faculty with other marketed or customized trainings.
The Training Programs Manager will demonstrate their ability to be proactive in working with the core faculty team with information and ideas. Program decisions must be made well in advance so that program implementation is in a timely and effective manner. The Training Programs Manager will market IEN training through social media and other mechanisms and will be responsible for managing IEN/ VNRLI websites. This position will also develop a monthly e-news for circulation to the School of Architecture and others, and IEN’s social media postings.
- A Bachelor’s Degree is required
- At least 4 years in event and/or training coordination; or the combination of 2 years in event and/or training coordination and 2 years project management
- At least one year experience in graphic design and copy writing for marketing materials
- At least one year experience in managing and designing materials for websites
- Experience working with multiple stakeholders (e.g. the public, state and local governments, private business and industry)
- A valid Driver’s license in good standing and ability/willingness to drive 12-passenger vans
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; Website content management, Adobe creative suite including InDesign, Mailchimp (or similar), Qualtrics database management, social media marketing and communications
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Above all, superlative people and professional-level communication skills are essential, including dealing with people from all walks of life and with different values and cultural norms, and with university colleagues, partners in the public and private and nonprofit sectors, different types of funders (corporate, nonprofit, government), program participants, and graduate and undergraduate student interns
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent at efficient conference coordination, logistical coordination, coordinating complex projects, and multi-tasking, setting and maintaining schedules, working proactively to prevent conflicts and “manage up”
- Ability to manage project finances, including budget management, grant writing, and running donor campaigns
- Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, and work proactively to account for inevitable delays and challenges with events
- Strength and experience in working on collaborative decision teams
- Able to work under direction of and follow priorities set by IEN Director as well as IEN’s collaborative faculty training teams
- Knowledge of and/or passion for the work of the IEN, and a desire to be a fully contributing member of the IEN high-performance team
- Commitment and ability to support the mission of the Institute for Engagement & Negotiation
- Master’s degree is preferred
- Experience in the following areas: marketing and graphic design training and experience, communications training and experience, experience working with state government and with environmental issues
- Ability to work with and oversee graduate student associates
- Knowledge of public outreach and stakeholder engagement practices
- Knowledge of current issues relating to Virginia's built and natural environment
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal environmental policy, regulations, programs, and institutions
- Design applications such as Canva or InDesign; web design and applications
- Multilingual skills (esp. Spanish) a bonus
- At least two year experience in graphic design and copy writing for marketing materials
- At least two year experience in managing and designing materials for websites
Hours and Work environment: This part-time position will require an average of 25-29 hrs/wk, with significant flexibility as some weeks with active trainings may require a full 40 hours while others may require much less than 15 hours. The candidate will work virtually, but will be expected to attend in-person staff meetings as well as in-person VNRLI workshops and be prepared to spend two nights away from home for each of the six session, spending overnights with the VNRLI programs in different parts of the state. Position offers the potential for growth into a full-time position as well as growth into other types of work with IEN.
