Summary of Duties:
This position will provide professional-level support for research projects within the Institute for Research and Education to Advance Community Health. This position will develop and manage data activities, and will assist with study design, human subjects coordination and management, and developing study protocols. This position will also develop data management protocols and assist with data collection, coauthor manuscripts for publication, present on research data and participation statistics, budget maintenance, day to day study oversight, and task delegation to, and oversight of, other team members.
Essential Duties
Study Design and Data Activities - 50%
- Develops the study implementation plan for recruitment, intervention program and data collection protocols including materials and procedures.
- Develops and maintains tracking system for study participants; data collection; and all research documents to ensure adherence to study protocol and compliance to Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations.
- Participates in developing database documents such as annotated questionnaires and codebooks.
- Reviews and assesses study data to ensure adherence to study protocol and compliance with IRB regulations.
- Gathers, records, scans, organizes, transcribes and verifies the accuracy of research study data; prepares data for computer input.
- Performs data entry and quality control. Assists the PI with preparing data summary reports. Assists the IREACH IT Data and Database Manager with internal data audits.
- Prepares weekly reports on study progress to Principal Investigator (PI) and project lead. Assists with scientific review papers and manuscripts.
- Assists research lead with project related tasks such as gathering information for annual reports, creates PowerPoint presentations and proofreads reports, publications and other documents.
- Reviews and assesses study data to ensure that field staff have completed data collection and study procedures.
- Oversees data collection efforts, including working with field staff and other institutions to verify the accuracy of the data.
- Drafts operational documentation, messages delivered in online platforms used to deliver the intervention.
Human Subjects - 20%
- Coordinates the day-to-day implementation of all study procedures for recruitment, study intervention and data collection, maintains tracking progress to ensure study progress along established timelines and implementation of research protocol.
- Monitors the project’s progress and troubleshoots as issues arise.
- Recruits and screens new participants for projects and research. Presents all informed consent material for each new participant, ensuring each participant understands the study, the data that is being collected, and confidentiality.
- Performs data collection (questionnaires, observational data, medical records, record audio, video, etc.) Ensures data is properly stored according to policy and procedure.
- Maintains project files and participant’s documents organization system ensuring compliance to IRB regulation. Maintains confidentiality of participant records.
- Assists in the preparation of IRB documents. Communicates with community agencies (clinics, labs, etc.)
- Problem solves challenges to recruitment, retention, and participant satisfaction with program. Prepares recruitment, data collection and study intervention reports for PIs.
- Serves as the primary assessor for follow-up interviews and coordinates follow-up interviews with field staff.
- Takes initiative to help resolve problems that may arise in the field and helps to addresses concerns. Schedules meetings and record meetings minutes.
- Travels as needed.
Project Implementation Activities - 10%
- Designs, develops and maintains project manual of operation/protocols
- Monitors the project’s progress and troubleshoots as issues arise.
- Manages project tracking logs and provides reports to PI on project status.
- Co-leads project meetings, shepherding team decision making processes.
- Communicates with community agencies (clinics, labs, etc.)
- Coordinates meetings and records meetings minutes.
Reporting - 5%
- Prepares recruitment, data collection and study intervention reports for PIs.
- Coauthoring research manuscripts for publication, preparing and presenting on research.
Fiscal and Budget Activities - 5%
- Responsible for purchasing including purchase requests, ordering and reimbursements.
- Submits travel requests, makes arrangements and prepares travel reimbursement requests. Ships materials as needed to project sites.
- Coordinates payments to participants and billing procedures related to study visits including purchasing, tracking, distributing and internal audits.
- Completes internal audits of participant gift cards or other monetized incentives and trains field staff on specific aspects of the study’s various protocols.
Supervision - 5%
- Recruits, screens, recommends for hire, trains, and supervises research study assistant.
- Schedules hours, maintains current schedules, assigns daily work tasks.
- Monitors attendance and acts on leave requests.
- Monitors performance and expectations; works with Personnel Coordinator and HRS on any performance issues that arise; conducts annual performance reviews.
Other - 5%
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic area AND two years of experience as a Research Study Coordinator OR equivalent education/experience.
Additional Requirements:
- A Bachelor's degree in biological, physical, health, or social sciences, business management, mathematics, ethnic studies, or similar field.
- Proficient with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, and Access.
- Must have strong written/oral communication and organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team on multiple projects.
- Work hours must be flexible to include evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license by the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and experience in working with Native communities.
- Experience working in research environment.
- Excellent proofreading skills, and a strong attention to detail.
- Experience working with internet applications

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced
Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.
Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
