Departmental Overview

The ASUC Student Union is the hub of student life on the UC Berkeley campus. Committed to all students and an inclusive campus community, the Student Union enhances the student experience by providing quality services and programs that foster experiential learning opportunities and ensures a balanced learning environment. As a partially financially self- supporting department within the Division of Student Affairs, it derives income through student fees; retail operations such as the Amazon Hub, Bank of the West, The Cal Student Store, vending, food service, and a variety of self-operated units such the Berkeley Art Studio, Publications and Media Center, Creative Lab, and Events Services. In addition, the ASUC Student Union provides the ASUC student government and organizations with financial and marketing services.

Responsibilities

A storyteller, first and foremost, with innovative ideas and an ability to bring them to life in unique, compelling ways. Uses digital media concepts to enhance the public's understanding and appreciation of the ASUC Student Union and its subsidiary units and businesses. Works within the Student Union's family of social media feeds and websites in creating engaging, creative, content for our campus community. Regularly updates our activities, events, products and information, on online forums, listings, and calendar sites. Uses brand guidelines to distinguish the Student Union's voice online. Creates unique and original content using a mix of photography, video, illustration, sound, and text. Works with the Student Union's creative team in creating new design and content elements.

Develop and Execute Effective Social Media Campaigns:
  • Maintain our social media presence across all digital channels.
  • Coordinate with our Student Union Experience team in deploying virtual programs.
  • Manage Student Union social media accounts, including but not limited to: Student Union Facebook and Instagram feeds, Creative Lab Instagram feed, Event Services Facebook and Instagram feeds, Berkeley Art Studio Facebook and Instagram feeds, Bear's Lair Facebook and Instagram feeds.
  • Oversee social media schedule and calendaring (Trello and Hootesuite) taking special consideration for campus events, the academic year, cultural and pride months, and other important events effecting UC Berkeley students.
  • Identify, develop and publish content to drive inbound traffic, including elements of text, photography and video.
  • Work with our Graphic Designer in creating engaging design elements to accompany social media content.

Manage the Student Union's Online Presence:
  • Raise Student Union and related businesses' profiles on third-party review sites to increase referral traffic.
  • Increase organic search rankings and referral traffic.
  • Keep third-party and campus directory sites (GoogleMyBusiness, Yelp, events.berkeley.edu, etc.) up-to date for all units and businesses within the Student Union.
  • Work with Student Union vendors on refreshing web content and reporting out-of-date content to vendors.

Create and Manage Content for Our Family of Websites:
  • Build out weekly website updates to support campaigns, initiatives, and events.
  • Execution of copy for the Student Union family of websites, including landing pages, registration pages, and donation forms.
  • Work with unit coordinators to keep websites fresh and content relevant.
  • Work with our Graphic Designer in creating engaging design elements to accompany website content.

Collaborate With Press, Influencers and Bloggers:
  • Draft simple news releases, routine statements, text, and brief articles.
  • Leverage content to achieve free earned media across popular blogs and relevant online media properties.
  • Coordinate with influencers in order to drive traffic and revenue to our businesses.

Monitor, Respond and Report on Online Conversations:
  • Implement best practices and leading digital experiences/tools to increase engagement and conversion.
  • Uses political acumen when responding to trolls, offensive or inappropriate comments, and sensitive topics.
  • Maintain file of digital news clippings and records of media placements.
  • Promptly answers incoming questions regarding the Student Union through our social media accounts.

Effectively Deliver Quarterly Reporting:
  • Measure and report on the performance of digital marketing campaigns.
  • Identify and track relevant key performance indicators around program launch and audience engagement.
  • Prepare and distribute information into an accessible presentation as requested.
  • Monitor performance, identify opportunities for improvement and make investment/channel recommendations to leadership.

Follows Responsible Online Practices:
  • Secure all social media and website passwords and immediately reports "hacks" of social media accounts or websites.
  • Act as an ambassador of the Student Union by engaging the public in an open, non-political, non- offensive, manor in both professional and personal online identities.
  • Ensure that all content created abides by UC Berkley's 'Principles of Community."
  • Maintain confidentiality when appropriate.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations.
  • Highly skilled in social media and electronic communications to disseminate messages to target audiences. Some familiarity with SEO.
  • Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen.
  • Good research and organizational skills.
  • Skill to maintain confidentiality.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the ASUC Student Union and UC Berkeley, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure.
  • Graphic design skills a HUGE plus. Including technical know-how of graphic design software (Adobe Illustrator, Canva).
  • Video creation and photography skills a HUGE plus. Including technical know-how of photo and video editing software (Photoshop, IMovie, Premier Pro or Rush)

Salary & Benefits
