Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, 1-year temporary contract faculty member in Cardiovascular Technology commencing with the 2021 Fall Semester. The primary teaching assignment involves all areas of Cardiovascular Technology.  This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.


The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals through the work of Cardiovascular Technology.

Faculty have the opportunity to enhance their classroom methods during two professional development days during the academic year, which include learning sessions like “Digital Accessibility”, “Basic Skills:  Helping students help themselves” and “Taking a skills-based approach to teaching college students”. Student-centered activities that support OCC’s mission include campus-wide student success projects funded by the Office of Student Equity; partnerships with local Hispanic Serving four-year institutions; active programs that work to improve the academic achievement of racially minoritized students, such as PUENTE and UMOJA; Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) and Disabled Student Program and Services (DSPS).     


Cardiovascular Technology (CVT) is an allied health profession with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart and blood vessel disease.  The cardiovascular technologist performs exams at the request of a physician to obtain information about a patient's heart and blood vessel anatomy and function so the physician can make a diagnosis.  The OCC CVT Program provides the following:

Graduate qualified ECG technologists

Graduate qualified noninvasive cardiovascular technologists in adult cardiac sonography within two years of completing the program.

Provide an adequate number of graduates to meet the need for employees within the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provide instruction in Cardiovascular Technology in accordance with established course outlines.

• Provide leadership in the development and revision of the Cardiovascular Technology curriculum responsive to the students served.

• Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.

• Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.

• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.

• Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.

• The assignment may include day, evening, weekend, online sections, and off-campus clinical sites.

• Function as an instructor for the Cardiovascular Technology (CVT) Program; teach assigned classes in theory, classroom laboratory, and clinical instruction leading students to qualification for employment and national registry examinations.

• Function as the Cardiovascular Technology Program Coordinator.

• Ensure and maintain compliance with program accreditation standards.  It will include communication and preparation of reports with appropriate national agencies and the district and college administration.

• Oversees program administration, student recruitment, admission and advising, budgetary assessment, planning, and preparation.

• Responsible for curriculum according to accreditation, college, and state standards - course development, updates, planning, revising, implementation, evaluation.

• Conduct ongoing program evaluation and program review.

• Conduct ongoing course and program evaluations of student learning outcomes and program reviews.

• Maintains current knowledge of the professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development.

• The assignment may include the recommendation of clinical affiliations and the assurance of the instructional quality of clinical education by regular visits to clinical education centers.

• Coordinate the scheduling of classes, including the recommendation of part-time (PT) assignments to the department IUA and Division Dean.

• Communicate with state and national professional associations.

• Work cooperatively toward mutual goals with other program coordinators and with the School of Allied Health Professions Faculty.

• Recommend the purchase of equipment and supplies and coordinate repair of lab equipment to assure program quality.

• Develop instructional innovations to ensure program success.

• Assist with program outreach, including publicity, community relations, advisory committee membership, and meetings.


Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (3):

• Any Bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment; OR

• Any Associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR

• Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

• Ability to contribute to campus and district-wide professional responsibilities and activities.

• Ability to complement existing staff, student, and community demographics in terms of professional and personal skills.


Additional Required Qualifications: 

RDCS or RCS registry is required.


Preferred Qualifications:  

Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of Cardiovascular Technology shape patterns of participation and outcomes.

• Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.

• Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.

• Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Cardiovascular Technology, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Cardiovascular Technology to students’ lives, interests, and communities.

• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within Cardiovascular Technology courses and classrooms.

• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.

• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.

• Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.

• Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).

• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Possess both cardiac sonographer credentials of RDCS and RVT.

• Possess a credential as a Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS) for Pediatric Congenital and Adult Congenital Cardiac Ultrasound.

• Possess a master's degree (or enrolled in a master's program).

• Graduate of a CAAHEP approved CVT Program.

• Possess a Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) credential in adult cardiac.

• Registered in other Cardiac specialties and/or Vascular Sonography. 

• Active involvement in professional organizations – Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS), American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), and Society of Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)

• Successful teaching experience in a Community College with educational skills in curriculum development, various instructional methodologies, and evaluation and assessment.

• Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a post-secondary setting.

• Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.

• Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.

• Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching andragogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class.

• Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.

• Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of Cardiovascular Technology and Diagnostic Medical Sonography, especially clinical courses.

• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in the department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.

• Desire and evidence of taking on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution.

Conditions of Employment

(Fall 2021 Semester Start Date) For a full-time, temporary, 1-year contract, position a maximum starting range of $54,626 to $90,403 is offered, based on the 2020-2021 salary schedule of $54,626 to $130,233. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,186 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.  (Salary Schedule:  AA)
