The Investigations Unit Director is responsible for supervising a newly created Investigations Unit, which is responsible for conducting investigations into potential violations of University policies referred from University offices, including the Offices of Institutional Equity & Diversity, Human Resources, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, and the Dean of Faculty.

The Investigations Unit Director plays a central role to ensure that the work of the Investigations Unit is carried out thoroughly, fairly, equitably, and in accordance with University policies and procedures. The Investigations Unit Director is responsible for managing all aspects of the Investigations Unit, including conducting investigations in collaboration with the referring office, staffing investigations, supervising the work of the investigators, and ensuring that all investigators receive appropriate training.

    Manage team of investigators to conduct investigations referred by other University offices into potential violations of University polices, ranging in complexity and sensitivity, including providing training, feedback and guidance to investigators. Conduct investigations, including, at times, as lead investigator (including interviewing subjects and drafting credibility assessments, findings of fact, and findings of responsibility).Be knowledgeable of applicable policies, regulations, and legal requirements.Collaborate closely with key University constituents on investigations.Partner with University constituents to create training modules for investigators, and coordinate delivery of ongoing training to investigators.

    Establish and maintain clear, consistent methods for investigation workflows, including investigative best practices, training, and reporting.Develop method and provide active oversight for investigation processes and protocols, including reviewing investigative plans and other associated documents.Ensure consistencies among investigations, including investigation templates and document retention policies.Organize, manage, and report on the work of the Investigations Office to University leadership.Oversee Investigations Office budget, expenses and staff.


Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required


8-10 years’ experience as indicated below

    Demonstrated experience conducting investigations such as student and/or workplace investigations, including conducting interviews, collecting and evaluating relevant materials, and collaborating with University constituents and ensuring the record management of findings, results and data are carefully managedExperience applying laws, regulations and/or institutional policies in employment or student conduct mattersSuperior judgment, discretion, confidentiality and tact in handling sensitive matters. Ability to maintain objectivity and treat all individuals with respect, dignity and empathyExceptional verbal and clear, detailed written communication skills including experience handling highly confidential sensitive materialDemonstrated ability to gather, analyze, interpret and present information and data for varying constituencies and purposesExperience building, developing and supervising a high-performing team within a service organizationAbility to develop and maintain productive, collaborative relationships with senior University leaders and campus-wide constituentsExceptional organizational skills and project management skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple complex cases simultaneously in a time-sensitive environmentFosters a climate of inclusion and is sensitive to diverse perspectives and cultural norms within and across multiple organizationsEvidence of success working both independently and collaborativelyAbility to recommend and innovate ideas to organize and implement resource recommendations, process improvements, document management and work-flow patterns Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required

    Higher education experienceJ.D. preferred
