The mission of the Department of Special Education and Child Development is to prepare highly effective and ethical professionals who have a positive impact on children, youth, families, community, and schools and who are successful in urban and other diverse settings. This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

The goals of the Special Education and Child and Family Development programs are to:

Provide instruction at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels that models research-validated best practice and challenges learners to aspire to excellence.Generate and synthesize knowledge through quality research that informs the preparation programs of the Department.Provide genuine and meaningful service to the public schools and other service providers that informs the preparation programs of the Department.

Description of Work:

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission, goals, and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses (face-to-face and online) with instructional responsibilities in one or more of the following areas: K-12 mathematics instruction for students with high-incidence disabilities, diagnostic assessment and progress monitoring, instructional planning for diverse learners, and applied behavior analysis; serve on graduate research committees; and provide service to the field, profession, program, department, college, and university.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field from an accredited university, have three or more years of successful K-12 teaching experience with students with disabilities, and be eligible for licensure in special education in North Carolina. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to teach at the college/university level and demonstrate commitment to engaging in professional service. Candidates with edTPA experience and who hold the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential are encouraged to apply.
