About the Department:

The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nuclear Engineering. The Department houses excellent research facilities including the PULSTAR research nuclear reactor and the Center for Engineering Applications of Radioisotopes (CEAR) that has maintained continuous industrial funding since 1980. NCSU is a member of the consortia that manage Idaho National Lab (INL) and Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) for the US Department of Energy (DOE). In 2014 NC State was awarded a $25M grant by the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to create the Consortium for Nonproliferation Enabling Capabilities (CNEC) comprised of 7 partner universities and 3 national laboratories. CNEC’s vision is to become the preeminent research and education hub dedicated to the development of enabling technologies and technical talent for meeting the present and future grand challenges of nuclear nonproliferation.

With an increasing faculty population and research areas/projects, there is greater opportunity for learning in the broad areas of fission reactor engineering, radiation applications, nuclear materials, computational science, plasma science, radiological engineering and fusion engineering.

Essential Job Duties:

Teach NE 528: Introduction to Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy, NE 591 Special Topics in Nuclear Engineering: Biomedical Applications of Plasma, NE 732: Principles of Industrial Plasmas, and NE 795: Advanced Topics in Nuclear Engineering: Plasma Medicine. Advise undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students. Establish a high impact research program in the area of plasma science and applications, with an emphasis on low temperature plasmas for life science applications. Disseminate original contributions to the field through peer review publications in journals and proceedings of international conferences and meetings. Provide leadership to develop university research centers that have responsibility for technology and managerial innovation.

Minimum Education and Experience:

PhD in Nuclear or Electrical Engineering and three years of experience as a Postdoc, Junior Professor, or Research Assistant Professor. Must have demonstrated experience with: atmospheric pressure plasmas for wound healing and air treatment; absolutely calibrated optical diagnostics for atmospheric pressure plasmas; interaction of technical plasmas with biological substrates; infrared spectroscopy for analysis of biological samples; plasma sterilization (low pressure and atmospheric pressure plasmas).
