14-Jun-2021 Close All Job SummaryThe Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder has an immediate opening for a Senior Research Scientist supporting NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). This position is for a Senior Space Scientist in NCEI’s Solar and Terrestrial Physics (STP) Group. A team of dedicated scientists within STP works to ensure that current and future space weather sensors on NOAA satellites provide effective operational products for use by the NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). STP’s overall responsibilities also include providing access to these environmental data by spacecraft engineers and the scientific community. The Space Scientist will be primarily responsible for ensuring the quality and availability of data from particle instruments on board satellites supported by the NCEI’s STP group including those on GOES, POES, and SWFO.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Perform calibration and validation activities for space particle instruments supported by the STP group.
- Submit research project proposals and assist with guidance of future STP group work.
- Present oral and written status reports to NOAA/NASA satellite programs, instrument vendors, and NCEI management and staff.
- Perform reprocessing of historical space environment data.
- Conduct science research leading to peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
- Assist with leadership and supervisory responsibilities within the NOAA-NCEI STP group.
- Due to the requirement to access export-controlled data and information, only U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents (green cards), or other protected individuals (i.e., persons designated as an asylee, refugee, or a temporary resident under amnesty provisions) may apply.

- CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
- The annual hiring salary range for this position is $120,000- $155,000.

- Ph.D. in Space Plasma Physics or related field.
- At least 10 years of relevant experience beyond degree.

- You will be required to successfully complete a federal background clearance process.
- Strong algorithm development skills and proficiency in Python and IDL.
- Ability to conduct scientific research in space physics as an individual researcher and as a part of a larger research team.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, ability to critically review the products of others, and capacity for working in a team environment.
- Willingness to make short-term trips to NASA GSFC, NOAA-NSOF, or instrument vendor facilities for technical meetings and/or pre-and post-launch activities.
- A proactive attitude combined with a willingness to work with multiple organizations in order to meet NOAA’s requirements.
- >10 years’ experience in satellite sensor design, algorithm development, and scientific research with space environment data.
- Expertise in radiation belt and solar energetic particle physics.
- Proven ability to pursue independent funding for research.
- Leadership experience working within NOAA/NASA satellite programs.
