The Departmen to Pediatrics, Section of Hematology Oncology Bone Marrow Transplantation has an opening for a full-time Research Associate position.

Nature of Work:

  • This position is part of an exciting research program to understand the molecular mechanisms of brain tumor biology. The laboratory uses cellular and mouse models to recapitulate the human disease, with an emphasis on transcription and chromatin regulation in diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), diffuse midline glioma (DMG), and other pediatric high-grade glioma (HGG). We are looking for a PhD scientist who is interested in in the application of nascent RNA and structural high-throughput sequencing techniques. Responsibilities will include the planning and conduct experiments, interpretation of data, giving presentations, authoring publications, managing budget and purchases for lab, assisting with project planning and training of new lab members.

Position Emphasis:

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate and supervise PRAs and other lab personnel
  • Conducting experiments, chromatin preparation, and library construction for advanced sequencing techniques such as Hi-C, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, and PRO-seq will be a primary focus of job responsibilities
  • Assisting with mouse experiments (mouse anesthesia, pre/post-op care, following mice for symptoms of tumor growth, medication administration, mouse sacrifice and tissue harvesting); animal facility staff does day-to-day mouse care, so this is not a usual part of job responsibility
  • Culturing of brain tumor cell lines
  • Conducting experiments using techniques including drug/radiation treatment of cell lines, western blot, shRNA transfection/infection, qPCR, protein/RNA extraction, flow cytometry/cell sorting, immunofluorescence microscopic cell imaging
  • Processing newly resected tumors (picking up in OR, preserving, creating cell lines, conducting assays on this tissue)
  • Preparing data for discussion and presentation
  • Attending department conferences and meetings
  • Attending and presenting at lab meetings
  • Leading lab management, including purchasing and maintaining budgets
  • Supervise PRAs and other lab personnel in day to day processes and experiments
PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for this position has been established at $63,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Philosophy degree in biology or related field
  • Four postdoctoral years of cancer, molecular, or cell biology lab experience
  • Significant experience with advanced high-throughput sequencing techniques
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a 10-panel drug test
  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a national criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Animal model experience
  • Cell culture experience
  • Previous supervisory experience in a laboratory setting
  • Prior experience in presenting or publishing biology research
  • Competency with Flowjo, Microsoft office, Prism Graphpad
Competencies:

  • Ability to stay organized under pressure
  • Knowledgeable of professional laboratory protocols
  • Ability to complete lab functions involving cell culture and aseptic techniques
  • Competency with molecular biology techniques
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Demonstrates the proficiency in computer software, equipment operation, or research technical skills
