Communications and Events Coordinator - Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service

Requirements

The Communications and Events Coordinator manages communications and events for the Master of Science in Foreign Service (MSFS) Program. The position is responsible for MSFS communications, outreach, and events management related to admissions and recruitment, current students, alumni, donors and advancement, the MSFS Board, and the broader Georgetown community. The position is responsible for website and daily social media management, coordinating major academic events (including orientation, graduation, open houses), developing marketing materials, writing and disseminating the weekly internal newsletter, the quarterly alumni newsletter and Board updates, and managing alumni outreach and donor stewardship.

Communications
  • Manages MSFS communications and outreach related to admissions and recruitment, current students, alumni, donors and advancement, the MSFS Board, and the broader Georgetown community, including website and daily social media management, developing marketing materials, writing and disseminating the weekly internal newsletter, the quarterly alumni newsletter and Board updates, and managing alumni outreach and donor stewardship.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Creating original written, graphic, and inter-active materials for publication and/or posting online to publicize/market the strengths and opportunities of the MSFS program to prospective students, donors, alumni, partners, and others.
    • Managing communications and publications on behalf of various MSFS functional areas, including academics, admissions, advisory board and alumni engagement, and other areas as indicated by the Associate Director.
    • Managing fundraising outreach and stewardship with new and existing donors, alumni, foundations, and other relevant audiences.
    • Manage MSFS social media initiatives and website, working closely with SFS Communications on technical issues.
    • Manage MSFS alumni and outreach databases.
    • Coordinate with SFS Communications on any event involving media.
    • Hiring, training, and supervising student assistants

Event Planning and Management
  • Manages MSFS events related to admissions and recruitment, current students, alumni, donors and advancement, the MSFS Board, and the broader Georgetown community. These include advisory board meetings, new student orientations, recruitment events, alumni events, special lectures, VIP visits, and recognition ceremonies in virtual and in-person environments.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Working with stakeholders to develop the program content and schedule
    • Managing contracts with vendors and securing related approvals
    • Reserving venues, managing setup and breakdown of event spaces
    • Coordinating on-line events
    • Generating invitations and associated correspondence
    • Maintaining event management records and contact lists
    • Coordinating with the President's office on protocol and security
    • Reconciling financial transactions associated with events
    • Hiring, training, and supervising student assistants

Work Interactions

The Communications and Events Coordinator reports to the Director of MSFS, works closely with other faculty and staff of the MSFS program and other units in the SFS, and supervises student employees.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of experience in event management and communications or closely related experience.
  • Proficiency in technologies related to the duties of the position, including social media and marketing.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
  • Master's degree and professional experience in higher education and/or international relations preferred.
