Departmental Overview

The Botchan Lab studies the mechanisms and regulation of the initiation of DNA replication in eukaryotes and how this process is coupled to the cell cycle. Drosophila chromosomes provide unique opportunities to learn about chromosomal dynamics. We have used structural biology, biochemistry and biophysical methods along side of genetics to study the pathways and proteins of DNA replication.

Responsibilities
  • Lab management: Safety officer, manage purchasing, ordering supplies and repairs, organize and manage lab reagents. Manage lab calendar and assign/schedule lab duties, autoclave waste, assist with animal protocol renewals and safety inspection.
  • Provide administrative support, logging data into lab spreadsheets, grant proposal preparation, research paper preparation, seminar scheduling, mail processing and general correspondence, and filling out standard UC forms (e.g. reimbursement forms, chemical inventories, safety checklists; manage supervisor's calendar; research and place orders for equipment and supplies; assist with PowerPoint presentation; preparations and posters; review financial statements).
  • Manage the lab's fly collection, including isolation of genomic DNA and genotyping cells by PCR. To do this the SRA will learn the labs protocols from Maren Bell who will be on recall for this training.
  • Standard molecular biology techniques. The SRA will assist lab members with their experiments in molecular biology. The SRA will perform immunohistochemistry, PCR, cloning, standard cell cultures and make these available to the lab members. In addition, the SRA will assist members of the lab when new members might arrive. The SRA will be required to attend weekly lab meetings to understand the basic objectives of the lab's research projects.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, and knowledge of lab safety procedures.
  • Proven organizational and leadership skills to be able to work independently.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills that create and maintain excellent working relationships in a team environment.
  • The capability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Broad understanding of equipment and technologies used in Neuroscience research.
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences (or equivalent experience), or related field and at least 2 years of extensive experience working in a biology research lab.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience managing multiple projects in a supervisory/managerial role for a minimum of two years in a corporate or academic setting.

Salary & Benefits

This is a monthly paid (exempt) position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience (stepped rates).
