Educational and Experience Requirement:

System Administrator I: Bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science or related field from an accredited institution with one year relevant experience. A combination of education, experience, certifications, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

System Administrator II: Bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science or related field from an accredited institution with two years relevant experience. A currently valid Microsoft Technology Associate certificate or higher, or a Red Hat Certified System Administrator certificate or higher could be substituted for one year of experience. Proficiency in Windows, Red Hat Linux, and Mac Operating Systems, and in one or more endpoint and configuration management platforms, such as Red Hat Satellite, Puppet, Ansible, SCCM, or JAMF preferred. A combination of education, experience, certifications, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

System Administrator III: Bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science or related field from an accredited institution with three years relevant experience. A currently valid Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate certificate or higher, or a Red Hat Certified Engineer certificate or higher could be substituted for one year of experience. Proficiency in Windows, Red Hat Linux, and Mac Operating Systems, and in one or more endpoint and configuration management platforms, such as Red Hat Satellite, Puppet, Ansible, SCCM, or JAMF preferred. A combination of education, experience, certifications, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

System Administrator IV: Bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science or related field from an accredited institution. Four years relevant experience in directly related field is required. Foundation, master, and architect-level certifications for operating system platform preferred. A combination of education, experience, certifications, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

System Administrator I: Assists with the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of Sam Houston State University Information Technology systems. Acquisitions, installs, and upgrades routine computer components and software.

System Administrator II: Maintains the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of Sam Houston State University Information Technology systems. Acquisitions, installs, and upgrades advanced computer components and software.

System Administrator III: Oversees and maintains the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of Sam Houston State University Information Technology systems. Acquisitions, installs, and upgrades highly advanced computer components and software.

System Administrator IV: Designs and implements new computer server systems and maintains existing servers to support the initiatives of university business.

Primary Responsibilities:

System Administrator I: Acquisitions, installs and upgrades computer components and software. Provides routine automation, and maintains security policies in conjunction with security office recommendations and state and federal regulations. Maintains core services to include e-mail, voicemail, printing, file sharing, authentication and access control, databases, video surveillance, disaster recovery, and storage systems. Processes service requests and tasks using the Information Technology ticketing system. Communicates effectively and timely with team members and clients. Serves as a member of project teams to build small (1 or 2 server) systems. Maintain small systems. Performs other related duties as assigned.

System Administrator II: Acquisitions, installs and upgrades computer components and software. Provides advanced automation, and maintains security policies in conjunction with security office recommendations and state and federal regulations. Maintains core services to include e-mail, voicemail, printing, file sharing, authentication and access control, databases, video surveillance, disaster recovery, and storage systems. Communicates effectively and timely with team members and clients. Serves as a member of project teams to build small (1 or 2 servers) to medium (up to 5 servers) systems. Maintains small to medium systems. Manages authentication and access control systems. Configures automation routines using scripting and other programming languages. Performs other related duties as assigned.

System Administrator III: Acquisitions, installs and upgrades computer components and software. Provides highly advanced automation, and maintains security policies in conjunction with security office recommendations and state and federal regulations. Maintains core services to include e-mail, voicemail, printing, file sharing, authentication and access control, databases, video surveillance, disaster recovery, and storage systems. Processes service requests and tasks using the IT ticketing system. Communicates effectively and timely with team members and clients. Serve as a member of project teams to build small (1 or 2 servers) to large (up to 10 servers) systems. Maintains small to large systems. Manages federation, authentication, and access control systems. Configures automation routines using scripting and other programming languages. Administers application-level databases. Administers information technology management systems such as Satellite, System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Dell Open Manage Essentials (DOME), Zenoss, and backups. Performs other related duties as assigned.

System Administrator IV: Gathers specifications, designs, and documents new systems. Installs, maintains, and upgrades servers while following change management procedures. Ensures servers are backed up, and server data is secure from unauthorized access. Plans for and responds to service outages and other problems. Performs light to moderate programming or scripting also necessary for task automation. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

System Administrator I: Must be available for after-hours on-call support. Knowledge of operating systems and applications. Knowledge of hardware and software troubleshooting. Familiar with or some experience using technologies such as Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID), enterprise-class server and direct-attached storage, as well as server virtualization. Understanding of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Domain Name System (DNS), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and File Sharing protocols. This is a security sensitive position and requires a Department of Public Safety (DPS) fingerprint background check and will need to adhere to the Texas Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Systems Access Policy. Some travel is required.

System Administrator II: Must be available for after-hours on-call support. In-depth knowledge of operating systems and applications. In-depth knowledge of hardware and software configuration and troubleshooting. Familiar with Network Load Balancers and clustering technologies. Very familiar with or very experienced using technologies such as Redundant array of independent disks (RAID), enterprise-class server and direct-attached storage, enterprise-class storage systems such as Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS), as well as server virtualization. In-depth knowledge of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Domain Name System (DNS), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and File Sharing protocols. In-depth knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Kerberos, Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS), and Security Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. This is a security sensitive position and requires a Department of Public Safety (DPS) fingerprint background check and will need to adhere to the Texas Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Systems Access Policy. Some travel is required.

System Administrator III: Must be available for after-hours on-call support. In-depth knowledge of operating systems and applications. In-depth knowledge of hardware and software configuration and troubleshooting. Very familiar with Network Load Balancers and clustering technologies. In-depth knowledge of or significant experience using technologies such as RAID, enterprise class server and direct-attached storage, enterprise-class storage systems such as SAN and NAS, as well as server virtualization. In-depth knowledge of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Domain Name System (DNS), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and File Sharing protocols. In-depth knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Kerberos, Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS), and Security Sockets Layer (SSL) technology. Familiar with storage network technologies such as Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and Infiniband. This is a security sensitive position and requires a Department of Public Safety (DPS) fingerprint background check and will need to adhere to the Texas Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Systems Access Policy. Some travel is required.

System Administrator IV: Intimate knowledge of operating systems and applications, as well as hardware and software troubleshooting. Very familiar with technologies such as Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID), Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SANs), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), rack-mountable servers, server virtualization, server clusters, databases, and hardware load balancers. In-depth understanding of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Domain Name Servers (DNS), Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Structured Query Language (SQL), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Server Message Block (SMB), Common Internet File System (CIFS), and various authentications protocols such as Kerberos and RADIUS. Requires a demonstrated ability to establish congenial work relationships and to communicate effectively within department and work group. Position requires incumbent to be on call 24/7. Special procedures sometimes require extended hours. Some travel is required. This is a security sensitive position and requires a Department of Public Safety fingerprint background check and will need to adhere to the Texas Criminal Justice Information Systems Access Policy.

The work schedule for one of these positions will be Sunday – Thursday, 8 am – 5 pm.
