Job Summary/Basic Function:

Job Summary:The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs Administration at Lamar University is pleased to invite applications for the position of Pre-award Contracts & Grants specialist. The pre-award office interfaces with researchers at Lamar University in identifying external funding opportunities, assembling proposal components for successful submissions to federal/state/private funding agencies and preparation for acceptance of research awards. The successful candidate is expected to provide professional guidance and support to faculty in a busy, fast-paced academic environment seeking external funding through research and service grants, cooperative agreements, sub awards, and contracts. The position serves as a source of expertise for federal, state, industry, and private foundation applications, and ensures that (1) grant submissions are in compliance with sponsor guidelines, (2) proposal budgets comply with sponsor requirements, and (3) required sections of applications are complete and submitted in a timely manner. Strong analytical, finance skills and attention to detail are required.

Essential Job Functions

1.Work with the principal investigators at Lamar University to prepare grant and subcontracts submissions to external sponsors.
2.Develop proposal budgets, assemble, review, and submit applications, and prepare Letters of Intent for grants and subcontracts.
3.Serve as liaison between the research community and external sponsors.
4.Exercise judgment and initiative and to interact with faculty, personnel, and external agencies in a professional manner.
5.Assures project compliance through a thorough understanding of the principles and practices of grant management in accordance with federal grant rules and guidelines.
6.Review, verify and certify grant applications and associated budgets, on behalf of department leadership.
7.Provides administrative assistance, financial oversight and guidance related to sponsored research.
8.Ensures the departments and colleges are in compliance with the Time and Effort Policy and reporting.
9.Attend and participate in group and project meetings.
10.Support the other staff members in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs on work relevant to research and grants administration.

Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Education Required:Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution. A master’s degree in finance, business administration, management, or STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) discipline is preferred.

Minimum Experience Required:
•1 year of combined working experience in business administration and/or technical areas.
•1 year of combined working experience in writing technical and/or institutional reports.

Physical Requirements:With or without accommodation. Will require an individual to perform office duty for 40 hours per week. Some activities could involve applicant to work with international students. Will frequently be required to perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, speak clearly have adequate listening comprehension.

Job Conditions:This position may require occasional evening and/or weekends to meet university and departmental needs.

Athletics

Students can participate in or cheer on their peers in more than a dozen NCAA Division I sports. Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Join a fraternity or sorority
  • Get involved in community service
  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
