Drew University seeks a dynamic and talented professional to join the University Library as Special Collections Reference Librarian and Curator of the Methodist Collection. Under the general direction of the University Librarian, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing reference and research services, formal and informal instruction, public services, and collection development. In addition to curation of the Methodist Collection, one of Drew’s most significant Special Collections, the candidate will participate in general library programs of collection development, instruction, research consultation, and digital projects, and will serve as liaison with the co-located General Commission on Archives and History of The United Methodist Church (GCAH) in shared library and archival services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees Methodist Collection and related rare books, archives, and other special collections.
  • Manages collection development for Methodist materials and oversees the cataloging of these materials.
  • Provides reference and research services for users of Drew Methodist Collections and GCAH Library collections
  • Serves as liaison for undergraduate and graduate-level subject fields in areas of relevant expertise, and contributes to general research and reference service within the Research & Reference department as assigned.
  • Provides classroom and reading room instruction in primary source scholarship, rare books and manuscripts, and archival theory and practice related to the Methodist Collection. Contributes to the library’s general instruction program to advance student information literacy and technological competencies.
  • Supervises a small number of student workers
  • Maintains an active program of professional development, scholarship, and service in areas of relevant expertise
  • Candidates with relevant credentials and expertise may have opportunities to teach credit-bearing courses in the graduate and/or undergraduate programs, typically with a separate teaching contract with the relevant school or college.

Required Qualifications:

● An MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution, or an advanced degree in a relevant field with 3-5 years of library or archive experience

● Demonstrable familiarity with the history of the Methodist tradition in its multiple and varied forms or clear commitment to gain such familiarity

● Proven ability to work effectively with faculty, students and library colleagues

● Excellent communication (oral and written) skills

Preferred Qualifications

● Demonstrable experience with special collections and/or archives

● Additional academic background in the Humanities, especially English, History, and/or Romance Languages

● Familiarity with information and digital technologies relevant to special collections and archives, such as JSTOR Forum, Omeka, and related repository and digital scholarship platforms and application

● Teaching experience in academic or library contexts

● Experience with museum, archival, and/or library exhibits, including digital exhibits.

The Drew University Library supports and advances the educational mission of the University by facilitating access to scholarly collections and information resources.

The Drew University Libraries consist of two buildings and numerous print and digital collections. The main University Library includes the main circulating, reference, and book collections, totaling more than 600,000 volumes, as well as the print and electronic periodicals collections and the University Archives. Special Collections acquires, preserves, provides access to and promotes the use of primary and special secondary resources in all formats. Most Special Collections are housed in the United Methodist Archives and History Center located just across the courtyard from the main University Library. Drew’s Methodist Collection includes books, periodicals and historical newspapers dealing with the history of global Methodism and related traditions.The General Commission on Archives and History is an official agency of The United Methodist Church and is charged with keeping the archival records of the denomination. Drew and GCAH share a building and collaborate in providing service to patrons.
