Description:

Applications are invited for the position of Chair of the Department of Surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate must hold, or be eligible for, an academic appointment at the rank of Full Professor. The appointment as Chair will be for a 5-year term effective April 1, 2022, renewable following a favourable review. The Chair will also hold the R S McLaughlin Chair in Surgery at the University of Toronto.

The Department of Surgery’s deep and rich tradition of academic excellence and innovation date back to 1843. The Department traverses six fully-affiliated hospitals and an expanding number of community-affiliated hospitals. It is comprised of 585 faculty members and research scientists, including over 70 endowed chairs and five Canada Research Chairs. The Department is responsible for surgical teaching throughout the undergraduate curriculum and oversees 11 residency programs with an approximate enrollment of 250 trainees; its fellowship program is the largest in the country, with over 200 fellows from more than 40 countries annually. It is also home to the Surgeon Scientist Training Program, a unique program with scholarly breadth in fundamental biology, clinical epidemiology, medical education, business administration and ethics. The Surgical Skills Centre serves as a surgical simulation centre where basic and complex surgical procedures can be learned and practiced.

In 2020, the Department was ranked fourth in the world for departments of surgery by the US News and World Report. Times Higher Education ranks the University of Toronto among the top 10 universities in the world for health sciences. Spanning the basic, clinical and rehabilitation sciences, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals and research institutes form one of the largest research enterprises in North America. The Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TAHSN) is one of the top five clusters of academic medicine in North America.

The successful candidate must be a scholar, experienced clinician and innovator. In addition to a record of excellence in research, creative professional activity and teaching, the Chair will possess outstanding leadership, management and communication skills, enabling leadership of a large department distributed across many fully- and community-affiliated hospitals. They will be committed to excellence in education and have a track record of successful collaborative and inclusive leadership. The Chair will have a sophisticated understanding of forging collaborative relationships in the public and private sectors and utilizing effective strategies to build and sustain effective partnerships locally, nationally and internationally. The Chair will bring an inclusive vision and have demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective environments. They will have experience both in alumni relationship-building and successful fundraising. The successful candidate must have the vision and ability to take the Department Surgery to an even higher level of academic achievement and recognition.

Among other responsibilities, the Chair will have oversight over the promotion and implementation of strategic priorities; recruitment, development and retention of faculty; fostering of collaborations with internal and external partners; and education and research programs in a geographically-dispersed department.

The successful candidate must have a medical degree and the equivalent of a Canadian Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Fellowship in surgery. They will be eligible for academic appointment to the rank of Full Professor and at a level of accomplishment to hold an endowed Chair. The preferred hospital site for the Chair’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be at one of the Department’s fully-affiliated sites—The Hospital for Sick Children, Sinai Health System, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Unity Health Toronto: St. Michael's Hospital, University Health Network, Women's College Hospital.

One of the three strategic domains of the strategic plan of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine is Excellence Through Equity. Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world, with over half of the population born outside of Canada. The Chair will have knowledge and an understanding of the diversity of trainees, faculty and the communities in the Greater Toronto Area, and will be deeply committed to practically implementing the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA)—particularly in the context of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Interested individuals must submit a (1) letter of interest, (2) statement on contributions to EDIA [300-word maximum] and (3) CV to [email protected]. Examples of contributions to EDIA include faculty and/or leadership development initiatives; development of inclusive pedagogies; research, scholarship and/or teaching with a focus on underrepresented and historically marginalized communities; public engagement activities that reach out to marginalized communities; mentoring of students, staff and/or faculty from underrepresented groups.

Applicants must also arrange for three confidential letters of reference—on letterhead, signed and dated—to be sent directly by the referee to [email protected] by the closing date.

The closing date for this position is Wednesday October 20, 2021.
