The Department of Anthropology at Texas State University invites applications for a cultural anthropologist with an applied focus on contemporary Latinx studies. This is a tenure-track appointment, at the assistant professor level, and will begin Fall 2022. Texas State is a Hispanic-Serving Institution and has a majority-minority student body. The successful candidate will contribute to department’s baccalaureate degrees in anthropology, M.A. in anthropology, and Ph.D. in applied anthropology.

Position responsibilities:
1) Teach appropriate introductory and advanced classes in cultural and applied anthropology and Latinx studies in all degree programs, as assigned.
2) Conduct local research projects with the goal of providing practical training and applied research experience for undergraduate and graduate students.
3) Maintain an externally funded, active research program that results in peer-reviewed publications.
4) Mentor undergraduate, M.A. and Ph.D. students in cultural anthropology and Latinx studies.
5) Contribute to service activities in the department, college and university.
6) Advance diversity and inclusion in all areas of faculty effort.

1) A Ph.D. in anthropology or a related field* at the time of appointment (Fall 2022).
*Applicants with doctoral degrees in other fields must have a minimum of 18 hours of graduate semester credit hours in anthropology.
2) Anthropological research in applied, contemporary Latinx studies.

1) Research focus related to Latinx studies including, but not limited to: policy/advocacy work, human rights, social change, migration, border studies, political economy, gender, identity, education, and health.
2) Geographic area of expertise is open; however, preference is for a candidate whose research is focused in Texas.
3) Active research in anthropology and Latinx studies with evidence of peer-reviewed publications and external funding in the forms of grants or contracts.
4) Experience in teaching, or the ability to teach, undergraduate and graduate courses such as introduction to cultural anthropology, theory, qualitative methods, applied anthropology, community research project, and courses in areas of the candidate’s research focus.
5) Experience mentoring students, especially first-generation students and minority students.
6) Clear plans to develop local research projects with the goal of providing practical training and applied research experience for undergraduate and graduate students. These could be the candidate’s research projects, or could include field schools and/or leading student-involved projects as part of the department’s Community Research Project course.
7) Experience in advancing diversity and inclusion in research, instruction, public engagement, and/or community collaborations.
