Job Details

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), New Jersey’s public, polytechnic research university, seeks a visionary, strategic, and inspirational leader to serve as its next president. This is a unique opportunity to lead an institution that, over the past 10 years, has dramatically increased its stature both nationally and internationally and has acted with purpose to become an R1 research university ranked among the top public institutions of higher education.

Enrolling approximately 11,500 students across six schools and colleges, NJIT has enjoyed a meteoric rise in many key performance indicators in recent years. New innovative programs, enrollment growth, and major developments in NJIT’s physical infrastructure and research productivity have driven an ascension up the rankings and allowed the university to attract a student body of a high caliber and a faculty made up of individuals who are leaders in their fields. NJIT has accomplished this while staying true to its roots as an institution that changes the lives of its diverse students and provides a vital workforce creation and economic service to the state and the nation, graduating well-prepared students in industry-relevant areas. NJIT educates more engineers and computer scientists than any institution of higher education in the tri-state area and was ranked the top university in the nation by Forbes for enabling its lowest-income students to achieve upward economic mobility. In recent years, the university has received accolades from national publications for alumni earning potential, education of underrepresented minorities in STEM, education of veterans, and a variety of top-ranked industry-relevant academic programs. With a clear dedication to access, a demonstrated return on investment for students, and a commitment to local and global impact through world-class research and curriculum, NJIT is a shining example of what public higher education can be.

Located in Newark, New Jersey, home to Fortune 500 companies, and one of the nation’s major air, shipping, and rail hubs, NJIT is strategically and geographically positioned to succeed. The main campus is less than 30 minutes from New York City by train, and the university’s Jersey City off-campus location sits across the Hudson River from Manhattan, allowing for easy access to students working or living in New York.

Already a leading polytechnic institution, NJIT’s strong foundation and recent momentum make its ambitious goals of pre-eminence and greater global impact possible. Yet, as NJIT approaches the next stage in its growth, it finds itself competing with some of the top universities in the nation. To continue its remarkable progress at a time when the value of higher education is increasingly requiring justification and demographic challenges threaten universities across the U.S. and particularly in the Northeast, NJIT will need a leader who is a strong communicator, advocate, and innovator with a vision for the future. The next President of NJIT must be a champion of public higher education who can galvanize the university community across student, faculty, staff, and alumni groups; an organization builder who knows how to advance scholarly and research capacity at a major research university; and an experienced and creative driver and steward of resources who, as the leader of a state college, knows how to interact constructively with government officials.
