    Job Description

    Major Responsibilities (80%):

    • Designated as the Certifying Official for the university within the Veterans Administration.
    • Certify verification of enrollment for GI Bill Educational Benefits using required VA process.
    • Interact with external providers of financial assistance for student veterans.
    • Serve as the main point of contact for student veterans.
    • Refer and proactively connect veterans to appropriate university offices to support their specific needs (e.g., housing, counseling, health services, academic support, CARE Team, etc.).
    • Meet with veterans, dependents, and their families during the enrollment process to help them understand the GI Bill and Veterans Affairs regulations.
    • Coordinate with Student Financial Aid around certification dates and financial aid disbursement.
    • Work with veterans to understand the interdependencies of certification and aid.
    • Coordinate messaging to veterans with Student Financial Aid.

    Additional Responsibilities (20%):

    • Raise awareness and advocate for student veterans on campus and within the community.
    • Contribute to the case management process of the UMSL CARE Team by meeting with students on sensitive and private issues and provide guidance and support to students and families during times of crisis.
    • Oversee and monitor the unit’s VA Work-Study program and submit all appropriate applications, contracts, and approvals while providing student employee supervision.
    • Supervise the UMSL VETS graduate assistant who is responsible for student programming in the Veterans Center.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications

    A bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of experience (or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience).

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling services or other related field and at least two years of full-time professional experience working with college students.
    • Prior U.S. military service and knowledge of VA Educational Benefits highly desired.
    • Ability to relate to veterans, build trust and advocate for them.
    • Commitment to and knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, multicultural, and LGBTQ+ issues.
    • Familiarity with college student learning and development theories.
    • Possess the highest degree of integrity and maturity due to the sensitive, confidential nature of student records.
    • Possess strong organizational skills, be able to work independently and collaboratively.
    • Strong oral, written, presentation and customer service skills, and the ability to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds, including parents of veteran dependents.
    • Ability to manage and adhere to tight deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, effective problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to collaborate and work successfully in a team environment.
