TITLE: Director of the University Counseling Center

DEPARTMENT: Student Engagement and Campus Life

REPORTS TO: Vice President for Student Engagement and Campus Life





The Director of the University Counseling Center (Center for Emotional Wellness) will provide culturally

competent individual and group counseling to a diverse student population. The Director will oversee

the coordination of care for mental health crisis and provide consultation as needed to faculty, staff, and students.

The Director will provide clinical supervision of mental health counselors, interventionists, and case



 Manages a clinical caseload that will include referrals from any members of the campus community

that will frequently require crisis intervention in high-stress situations involving immediate risk to the

mental and physical health of students.

 Maintains current, accurate, and timely clinical documentation in accordance with state and federal

law, professional ethics, and district counseling services policies.

 Provides individual and group counseling via scheduled appointment and walk-in coverage to student

seeking assistance related to personal concerns.

 Conducts mental health assessments and screenings such as suicide risk, drug and alcohol, threat and

risk assessment, etc., utilizing evidence-based practices.

 Exercises clinical judgement in assessing situations and making recommendations regarding intake,

referrals, triage, and interventions.

 Provides professional consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators related to student mental health


 Make appropriate referrals when needed to Student Health Services for medication management.

 Reviews client record to determine progress, effectiveness, and appropriateness of intervention


 Provides psychoeducational workshops and outreach to the campus community.

 Hosts and schedules departmental meetings, case consultations, and staff development programs as


 Participates in continuing education and professional development activities related to the performance

of job functions and the maintenance of skills in professional counseling.

 Supports student college persistence through wellness activities and partnerships on campus.

OTHER DUTIES: Perform other duties as assigned.


 In accordance with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges

(SACSCOC) accrediting requirements, Doctorate or Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology,

Counseling Psychology, Counseling or Rehabilitation, Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy,

or related behavioral sciences field from an accredited institution.

 Candidate must be independently licensed (or eligible for licensure within one year) in the

Commonwealth of Kentucky as: Licensed Psychologist; Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor

(LPCC); Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist


 Clinical Supervision experience; supervision of Doctoral and Master’s level therapists.

 Two to three years of clinical counseling experience in higher education of similar community or

educational settings.

 One to two years of experience counseling in a College or University environment preferred.

 Experience with diverse populations/HBCU students preferred.

 Experience or specialty in specific areas such as: Trauma, Family Systems, LGBTQ preferred.


 Knowledge of and adherence to applicable professional ethics and board rules, federal, state, and local

laws, regulatory codes, ordinance, legislative changes, and procedures relevant to assigned programs,

projects, and counseling operations.

 Knowledge of current counseling practices, theories, and research in college student services.

 Understanding of the Kentucky State University philosophy and mission and how counseling services

support student persistence, retention, and engagement.

 Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary

team (e.g., regional CARE and Behavioral Intervention Teams).

 Ability to work collaboratively on a team with colleagues, college departments and student groups.

 Ability to work under high stress and emotionally charged conditions on a routine basis.

 Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of student information and work-related information and

materials such as Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Healthy Insurance

Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and confidential electronic records.

 Work in a collaborative manner with diverse constituencies, working effectively in a diverse and

multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.

 Ability to evaluate situations accurately and determine appropriate course of action using judgement

according to established policies and procedures.

 Excellent verbal and written communications skills, and interpersonal skills.

 Planning, managing, prioritizing, and problem-solving skills.

 Strong presentation skills that effectively convey information to faculty, administrators, staff, and

students, as well as community leaders and groups.

 Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity and multicultural issues.


 Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

 Some physical effort moving objects will be required.

 No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

 Extensive evening and weekend hours may be required.

Our Mission

Geographic Region
Kentucky State University's geographic region shall be state-wide for its liberal studies mission, its land grant functions, and its service to state government. In addition, Kentucky State University's primary service area for commuting students shall be for Franklin and contiguous counties.

Institutional Admission Standards
Kentucky State University shall admit students to the institution under selective admission standards to which exceed the minimum guidelines established by the Council on Higher Education, with only limited exceptions. Institutional policy for admitting under-prepared students, including the removal of academic deficiencies within a specified time frame. Through this approach, the University seeks to provide broad access and high-quality programs.

Degree Levels
Selected associate and baccalaureate degree programs shall be oriented toward liberal studies and selected career opportunities related to state government services. Kentucky State University shall offer selected master's degree programs based on demonstrated need, with priority given to a public administration curriculum to meet the needs of state government.

Strategic Directions/Program Priorities
The University shall focus on liberal studies programming. Drawing upon its African-American heritage, the University will promote the values and methods of interdisciplinary and multicultural education in its liberal studies offerings. All students shall participate in common curricula that explore the liberal studies. Drawing upon the multicultural strengths of the University, emphasis shall be placed on preparing minority students for careers in education and in other selected professions including business, computer science, nursing, human services, and public services. These strategic priorities translate into a core of liberal arts baccalaureate degree programs, in addition to degree programs at the associate [A], baccalaureate [B], and master's [M] levels that may include the following: education [B]; business [B]; computer science [A,B]; nursing [A]; home economics [B]; human services [B]; and public administration [B,M].

Enhancement of Instruction
The University shall emphasize teaching. Meeting student needs shall be paramount. The University shall focus on the needs of its students, which include, but are not limited to, full-time and part-time residential students, commuting students from its primary service area, and state governmental employees.

Service and Research Functions
Kentucky State University, as the 1890 land grant institution in the system, shall carry out its responsibilities under federal law and participate fully in appropriate U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, in accord with the mission of the University.

Kentucky State University shall be the major repository for the collection of books, records, and artifacts relative to the history and status of African-American citizens of the Commonwealth and elsewhere. The University shall make such materials available for casual and scholarly study.

Kentucky State University shall focus on meeting the applied research and service needs of state government.

Collaborative Ventures
The priority master's degree program offered by Kentucky State University shall be carefully articulated with related doctoral programs offered by the doctoral-granting institutions in the system. The University shall develop and employ telecommunication resources to communicate with other institutions in the fulfillment of its mission. Curriculum development shall emphasize the transfer of credits form other institutions toward degree completion.

Kentucky State University shall promote cost effectiveness in academic programming and institutional management. Strategic planning resulting in the elimination of duplicative or non-productive programs is essential while the development of carefully selected new programs compatible with the mission is appropriate. Measures of quality and performance shall be the foundation of the University's accountability system which promotes the continuous improvement of programs and services.
