Organizational Unit Overview:

The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina.

Job Duties :

Primary Purpose of Position: Nursing Assistant
The purpose of this position is to provide nursing support to the Ambulatory Pediatric Clinics with responsibilities including providing direct patient care, facilitating flow of clinical activities, and a variety of treatments to the assigned patient population. The individual in this position will perform a variety of tasks with some detail, requiring general understanding and skill in the application of work procedures. Work assignments generally involve patients in stable condition. Work includes the reinforcement of routine patient teaching and may include participation in orientation of students and other staff of the unit, procedures, and/or the function of the nursing assistant. All work is performed under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.
Preferred Education/Experience: High school diploma and completion of DFS approved NA I program of study and successful completion of North Carolina approved NA II course to be able to perform NA II tasks. Certification in Basic Life Support is required prior to completion of general orientation. May require working irregular hours under stressful conditions, rotating shifts, and weekends. Employee must possess: considerable knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy; ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of complex therapeutic procedures; and ability to make accurate physical observations of patients.
License or Certification: Must have a license to practice as a Nursing Assistant I by the Division of Facilities Services and NA II in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. This position requires registration as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation:

Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited school of nursing and one year experience as a registered nurse.

License or Certification required by the Department:

Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
