The Washington & Jefferson College department of athletics offers paid coaching internships to provide a hands-on learning experience with a NCAA Division III sports organization. The W&J athletic internship program is an excellent step toward a coaching career in a number of different sports. The internship provides a stipend, housing, and a meal stipend. Opportunities are available in the sports of baseball, basketball, cross country/track & field, field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, softball, and volleyball. W&J also offers one internship in athletic communications each year. The program's objective is to use the college's NCAA Division III sports to give aspiring coaches opportunities to observe, participate and gain experience to eventually become a head coach at the collegiate level. Designed as a vocational tool, the program will educate interns on specific aspects of the duties of a head coach, including recruiting (30 percent), practice planning (10 percent), on-field instruction (40 percent) and video editing and other assigned duties (10 percent). On-field coaching experience will provide the intern with an opportunity to test personal ideas and coaching methods under the direction of a seasoned, veteran head coach. The intern will learn the rules and regulations with recruiting under the NCAA Division III umbrella. The program provides the opportunity to gain exposure on a highly-competitive NCAA Division III coaching staff, while increasing marketability to a future employer. The intern will have the ability to be exposed to resume-building situations while applying coaching concepts and principles. Hands-on opportunities to work with equipment and technology offered by the college will also enhance the experience. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to be exposed to the administrative side of the athletic department through experiences with game management, facility coordination and working with the college's Student Athlete Advisory Council. The head coach or sports information director is the intern's primary supervisor. The intern will also be evaluated by the Director of Athletics.
Stipend: $10,000 (10-month contract August 1 thru May 31)
Housing: On-campus apartment (2-3 interns per apartment); Utilities included with the exception of cable and internet
Meal Stipend: $100 per month (10 months starting in August)Availability for travel, and evening or weekend hours as necessary
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Working environment includes indoor work and outdoor work in a variety of weather/temperature conditions. Physical requirements include: standing, sitting, walking, running, bending, stooping, and reaching overhead.
