Job Summary The Georgia Tech School of Aerospace Engineering is seeking a Research Engineer to design, develop, implement, and test open-architecture avionics systems for novel experimental UAVs. The School of AE is currently developing medium- and large-scale UAVs (both fixed- and rotary-wing) as testbeds for platform-level technologies. As part of this development, the School seeks to develop an open-architecture embedded flight control system that can be adapted to a wide range of air vehicle configurations. The avionics system will support reconfigurable control laws and will be capable of interfacing with ground stations and onboard flight recorders. The Research Engineer (RE) will lead the design, development, and flight test of this research-grade avionics system. This includes the design and implementation of the embedded software architecture, sensor and actuator selection, software- and hardware-in-the-loop testing, and system integration. The RE will work in close collaboration with School of AE Faculty members, graduate students, Research Engineers, and other UAV development staff (including UAV pilots) within the School of AE’s UAV development program.Required QualificationsA Master’s degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
A Master’s degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
A Doctoral degree
Preferred QualificationsA strong background in mechatronics, to include expertise in sensor selection and integration, embedded systems programming (using microcontrollers and/or embedded computers), and actuator interfacing. Candidates should also have thorough knowledge of control systems design and implementation. Proficiency in embedded C/C++, MATLAB, and Simulink is required, and proficiency in Python is preferred. In addition, some experience in development and flight test of UAVs is strongly preferred but not strictly required. Experience in embedded control systems design and implementation.
