Job Summary: The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care to patients. The RN reviews physicians' orders for accuracy and authorization prior to implementing them; prescribes and initiates nursing treatment through direct, assisted or delegation to other staff.

Additional Department Summary: The Registered Nurse, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse Supervisor and consulting MD, will provide professional nursing services within a self contained residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed female juvenile offenders located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The program is a 16 bed program that is administered by the Youth Services Institute through a management agreement with the Alabama Department of Youth Services. The Registered Nurse is responsible for administering prescribed medication to program youth, assisting the Registered Nurse Supervisor and/or consulting physician/nurse practitioner with physical examinations, and providing program related medical consultation for youth. In addition, this person will be available for youth if minor/moderate injuries are sustained during emergency situations. As requested by the Registered Nurse Supervisor or consulting physician/nurse practitioner, the Registered Nurse is responsible for scheduling offsite medical appointments for youth. Additionally, this person may accompany care staff on medical visits for program youth, or during periods of unavailability, the Registered Nurse will provide other staff with an information form for completion by a physician or nurse practitioner regarding youth medical treatment.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or the equivalent. State of Alabama valid/current Registered Nurse License.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: A current and valid license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Alabama. At least one year of practice experience as a registered nurse. Possess excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills including an ability to develop working alliances among program staff at every level. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to draw blood for medical tests and capacity to perform laboratory procedures such as urinalysis and swabs. Skilled in the administration of CPR, medical defibrillator, and advanced cardiac life support. Ability to prepare and maintain medical records. Knowledge of basic computer skills and experience with a database entry.
