Position Summary:

The Police Officer is a sworn peace officer, having met all applicable requirements of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Under general supervision, performs functions related to the preservation of public peace and order, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the protection of persons and property, the enforcement of laws of the State of Illinois and the rules and regulations of Prairie State College. Performs a variety of law enforcement and security related duties to ensure the safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and maintains security of the college property and facilities.

Reporting and Supervisory Relationships:

Direct reporting relationship to the Police Sergeant.

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Responds to public safety emergencies, complaints, concerns or questions; administers proper procedures to ensure public safety; conducts criminal investigations; enforces parking regulations, controls and direct traffic. Initiates and completes follow-up investigations and prepares applicable crime and incident reports.

2. Conducts traffic crash investigations. Completes traffic crash reports in accordance with the State of Illinois requirements.

3. Maintains visible patrols of college property and surrounding areas to: deter criminal activity, proactively preserve law and order, while maintaining positive public relations.

4. Identifies and investigates criminal activity, safety and fire hazards and other incidents/complaints.

5. Responds to life and property emergencies; responsible for immediate evaluation of the emergency and notification of emergency personnel in accordance with the PSC Emergency Operations Plan, via the proper chain of command.

6. Provides public assistance; participates in community service activities; uses safe work practices and procedures and provides courteous customer service. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships.

7. Maintains clean and serviceable equipment, including firearms. Attains and maintains Basic First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.

8. Maintains a law enforcement presence at college functions and provides escorts as needed.

9. Serves as a presenter to college community in self-defense measures, personal safety awareness and crime prevention.

10. Provides campus patrols using a variety of mobility sources such as mountain bicycle, 4×4 all-terrain vehicle, golf cart or similar other devices for strategic areas of campus to include pedestrian routes and nature trails.

11. Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and procedures of law enforcement and traffic control.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor work with substantial exposure to seasonal weather conditions. The position requires moderate physical activity involving standing, walking, driving and running. Medium physical labor is required including exerting, up to 50 pounds of force in order to lift, carry, push, or pull or otherwise move objects. The employee must have enough flexibility to maneuver on uneven terrain, and be able to jump over obstacles. The employee is subject to high levels of public contact requiring hearing, talking, explaining and directing others.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Must be 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States.

2. Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field or 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or equivalent combination of education and experience at an accredited college; or police agency; or 4 years of continuous active duty service (Honorable) with the U.S. Armed Forces.

3. Must have completed a Law Enforcement Basic Training Course at a law enforcement training academy approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. (Examples; Chicago Police Academy, Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, Cook County Sherriff’s Police Academy or Illinois State Police Academy.

4. Valid driver’s license.

5. Personal history with no criminal conviction(s)

6. Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal skills.

7. Must have tact and the ability to communicate with people and be able to take command of a wide variety of situations, some of them life-threatening.

8. Must be able to interpret and apply basic criminal law, Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.

9. Must pass a physical agility, background investigation, written exam, psychological exam and drug screening.

10. Must be able to meet physical fitness standards as defined by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and the college.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Bachelors’ degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science or other related field.

2. Completion of Illinois Mandatory Training Act Certification.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of basic Illinois Criminal Law and procedure via documented police training programs/certification/course work in criminal law.
