Institutional Strategy and Analysis (ISA) sustains NC State’s mission and vision by providing consistent and reliable data that informs and supports the university’s strategic decisions. ISA collaborates across all campus constituencies and levels of governance to identify NC State’s information needs, collect and manage data, provide analysis, and disseminate clear and accurate findings to give momentum to the university’s forward progress. ISA is also responsible for the management of strategic planning, including implementation planning and metrics for the university strategic plan. The collective function of all parts of ISA further serves the diverse information and reporting needs of NC State and external entities in a timely, unbiased and responsible manner.Essential Job Duties:
The IT Analyst/Programmer I supports Institutional Strategy and Analysis (ISA) survey research, reporting, and analytics requirements by understanding the content, format, and data definitions of university datasets – students, employee, survey, and others – and applying that knowledge in the course of everyday work. The Analyst/Programmer I identifies, collects, analyzes, and reports student, employee, and survey data in support of external reporting requirements and internal planning and decision-making. The Analyst/Programmer I provides analysis and interpretation of the data; promotes accuracy, integrity and consistency of data; and effectively reports and communicates the findings to a variety of constituents.
Specific duties of the position include:
- Develop and maintain large, complex datasets for both survey and institutional data, including writing, testing, and implementing programs to merge files, restructure and recode variables, assign labels and values, check and fix errors, and create codebooks and other documentation.
- Create user-friendly data tables, visualizations, and narrative summaries that accurately and efficiently present student, employee, survey, and other data.
- Develop, streamline, error-proof, and automate processes for managing data and producing reports and dashboards.
- Analyze and document information needs, recommend solutions, and build dashboards and reports to support effective information distribution and executive decision making at the university.
- In consultation with ISA staff, create documentation for official ISA datasets, including survey data, and visualization processes.
- Assist with data validation and data quality reviews of existing dashboards and institutional datasets.
- Collaborate with ISA staff on responses to requests for information including production and delivery of reports and dashboards using existing data analytics platforms and datasets.
- Compose, review, and finalize original comprehensive and complex documents, reports, and visualizations utilizing tools such as Excel, SAS, SAS VA, and Tableau.
- Work with UNC System Office, Division of Information Technology, and other NC State units that maintain institutional data and data systems to ensure high-quality, accurate data are available for reporting and analytics.
The ideal candidate will have experience in the phases of enterprise data lifecycles in higher education, including data acquisition, cleaning and processing, documentation, data validation and analysis, and visualization.Other Responsibilities:

Master’s degree; or Bachelor’s degree with zero – two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experienceOther Required Qualifications:
Experience with programming languages (such as SAS, SQL, or similar), including macro language and ODS.
Experience with data visualizations such as SAS VA, Tableau or similar software.
Demonstrated ability to analyze data and translate it into usable information.
Ability to work with complex data.
Ability to ensure data integrity.
Strong communication skills and ability to understand the needs the campus.
Ability to create and update documentation.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities in a face-paced environment.
Ability to follow security procedures and work with secure/confidential data.
Self-motivated, with high standards for rigorous and detailed work.
Ability to work collaboratively with others.Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in social sciences or a quantitative or analytical discipline with 9 credit hours in programming/statistics.
One year of experience in performing data mining, analysis, and reporting or visualization of data.
Experience in higher education and in collection and use of data to support decision making.
Experience with HTML/HTML5.
Experience with WordPress.
Coursework or direct experience related to all phases of survey research, in particular analyzing survey data and preparing tables and visualizations to display results.Required License(s) or Certification(s):
