Assistant Dean, OPICS - Georgetown University Law Center

The Assistant Dean of the Office of Public Interest and Community Service (OPICS) comprehensively directs that office's functions including: career advising for J.D. students interested in legal opportunities in the public interest and government sectors, both during law school and for post-graduate employment. The Assistant Dean leads in the development of recruitment programs that connect students with employers in these sectors, including a robust post-graduate public interest fellowship program. The Assistant Dean administers the Law Center's extensive pro bono program and works to build and develop a public interest community at the Law Center. OPICS oversees the guaranteed summer public interest funding program for all returning J.D. students and other public interest programs such as the Blume Public Interest Scholars Program and the Public Interest Fellows Program.

Career and Academic Counseling
  • Provides career advice to students and alumni interested in pursuing public interest legal careers
  • With public interest advisors and recruitment staff, supervises Public Interest Fellows Program, post-graduate fellowship program, and alumni network
  • Coordinates public interest resource collection, ensuring that resources are kept up-to-date and readily available to students
  • Keeps abreast of public interest legal market
  • Supervises coordination of Government and Public Interest Interview Program and Public Sector Recruiting Program
  • Oversees planning and implementation of career-related programs and workshops
  • Counsels public interest students on curriculum choices and clinics
  • Provides individual counseling, conducts workshops, participates in curriculum fair, monitors curriculum offerings at GULC and other schools and makes appropriate recommendations

Blume Scholars Program Management
  • Recruits and selects Blume Scholars (including reading application materials, interviewing, and selecting)
  • Matches incoming Blume Scholars with faculty advisors and practitioner mentors
  • With Blume advisors in OPICS, oversees development and implementation of annual Blume events and seminar program
  • Works with Office of Admissions on Blume application materials and selection process

Office Supervision and Management
  • Directs all personnel decisions and manages office staff
  • Supervises work assignments, conducts annual evaluations
  • Supervises team leaders and Executive Assistant
  • With team leaders, determines policies, practices, and priorities of office
  • Makes budget determinations and presents annual budget request to Finance Committee
  • Serves as advisor to Dean, Associate Deans and Administrative Leadership for strategic planning
  • Serves on Careers and Judicial Clerkships Committee as well as other committees as requested, represents office at meetings, before faculty-student committees, and at other functions
  • Leads office staff meetings, ensures efficient administration of all office tasks and activities

Outreach, Public Relations, and Research
  • Supervises internal and external relations of office
  • Attends regional and national conferences and speaks at public interest functions
  • Researches current trends in public interest law, public interest legal employment, and pro bono service
  • Supervises publication of public interest resources for students and alumni
  • Works with Office of Development as needed to secure grants and other funding to enhance public interest programs
  • Fosters communication between student groups and administration/faculty

Pro Bono Programming
  • With Pro Bono Coordinator, facilitates pro bono activities of students and other members of the Law Center community.
  • Conducts outreach to DC-area public interest and government organizations to identify and develop law-related volunteer opportunities for students.

Work Interactions

This position oversees the work of the whole office. Internally, that involves supervising the team leaders (including the 1L team, upper-class team, recruiting team) and coordinating the work across all of the office's team members. Outside the office, the Assistant Dean either directly interfaces with the Office of Career Strategy, the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Financial Aid Office, the Externships Office, the Clinical Programs Office, the Office of Admissions, the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, the Dean's Office, Centers and Institutes, faculty members, and others to support J.D. students as appropriate. The Assistant Dean also oversees assistance to and collaboration with public interest and community student groups such as the Equal Justice Foundation, Criminal Law Association, Georgetown Defenders, Human Rights Action, National Lawyers Guild, OutLaw, and the Student Bar Association.

  • J.D. and three-years post-J.D. experience (including legal, management, and supervisory experience) in a public interest law setting.
  • Experience in student counseling and academic leadership desired.
