Definition Golden West College seeks a Part-time, non-tenured track Head Women’s Softball Coach to manage the women’s softball program and to teach Fall, Spring, and Summer intercollegiate athletic classes. Golden West College is a member of the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) and the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA). The successful candidate will report to Athletic Director and will be responsible for all aspects of planning, managing, and directing a successful Community College athletic team. This will include coaching, practice and game preparation, recruiting, academic success, team travel, and fundraising.
Part-time/temporary coaching positions offer flexible hours and the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. As one of the largest community college districts in southern California, we offer a wide range of opportunities in transfer, general education, vocational and occupational programs. These part-time positions are as needed and applicants should live within commuting distance to Orange County.
Head Coach, Women's Softball Responsibilities:
  • Leading in all phases of coaching intercollegiate women's softball at the community college level, including but not limited to the recruitment of quality college student-athletes; lead practice, competitions, and games; enforce team policies and rules as well as college policies and rules.
  • Recruitment of players, including scout, identify and recommend student-athletes in such a manner that encourages diversity, while maintaining a competitive atmosphere.
  • Budget development and management, practice/game management, monitor academic progress as well as social media supervision of student-athletes.
  • May drive college vehicles or college leased vehicles to and from scheduled contests.
  • Communicates with the Sports Information Director in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates with Sports Medicine the care and reporting of incidents and injuries to the appropriate college and district personnel.
  • Prepare a season summary and ensures nominations for student honors within conference, region and other athletic governing bodies.
  • Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.
  • Maintain effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administrators, alumni and develop community support for the program, and fundraising.
  • Field prep for practice and game day competition.
  • The head coach is expected to perform all other job-related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director within the rules and regulations of the CCCAA, Orange Empire Conference, and Golden West College.

  • Qualifications and Physical Demands

    Minimum Qualifications:
    1. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (d):

  • Bachelor's degree or higher plus 2 years of experience; OR
  • An AA degree plus 6 years of experience; OR
  • Valid California Community College Instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355; OR
  • A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.
  • 2. Two (2) years of professional experience that is directly related to coaching Softball.

    3. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    Desirable Qualifications:
  • Evidence of the ability to actively recruit, plan, organize, and administer a Softball program.
  • Experience with student success programs in a community college setting.
  • Knowledge of CCCAA and guidelines governing recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
  • Six years of Softball coaching experience; prefer two years as a head coach.
  • Teaching experience preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, fostering a cooperative work environment.
    Licenses and Certifications:
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Valid driver license
  • Physical Abilities: Requires the ability to function in a classroom, office, gymnasium or outdoor environment performing work of primarily active nature with requirement to utilize large motor skills. Requires the ability to frequently carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry-on conversations over the phone and in person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in on-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment. Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens. Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift, pull, push or move up to 25 pounds. Requires the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, turn/twist, balance, and reach overhead. Working ConditionsWork is primarily performed on a Softball field, classroom or office setting under general supervision and with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work is required.Conditions of Employment

    Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.
