Overview
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world. This position exists to provide expertise and leadership in power supply and electromagnetic engineering as applicable to magnetic confinement research devices at PPPL and other collaborating fusion research institutions.
Responsibilities
- To play a lead role in the design, commissioning and operation of power supplies associated with magnetic confinement research devices including the use of existing facilities, upgrades to existing facilities, and the construction of new facilities for new projects. This includes high current, high voltage, multi-MW AC/DC converter systems and associated equipment such as power cabling, DC bus bar, control systems, and protection systems, as well as the integration with experimental fusion research devices such as tokamaks and stellerators.
- Planning, development, coordination, and execution of important tasks as Cognizant Individual.
- Technical oversight, performance, reliability and configuration of assigned PPPL subsystem as Responsible Engineer including both design and operational aspects.
- Institutional service as Technical Authority (subject matter expert) on assigned engineering topical area.
- Performance of engineering studies using power systems and electrostatic/electromagnetic analysis software.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Master of Science or PhD in Electrical Engineering (MSEE)
- Design and operation of high current, high voltage, multi-MW AC/DC converter power supplies using modern power electronics technology, including both line-commutated thyristor converters and fast switching power amplifiers
- Application of power supply systems to tokamak or stellerator magnet coils and/or plasma heating systems (RF or Neutral Beam Injection) including feedback control and protection systems
- Integrated design and operation of tokamak or stellerator electrical/electromagnetic systems, including magnet coils and power supplies, to achieve prescribed magnetic fields while accounting for transient behavior including fault conditions.
- Power systems and electrostatic/electromagnetic analysis software such as PSCAD, PSIM, EMTP, MATLAB/Simulink/SimPowerSystems, OPERA, ANSYS, etc.
- Ability to interface effectively with a wide range of scientific and technical personnel, to serve as leader of engineering projects, and to work on all aspects of a project is highly desirable.
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from participation in certain foreign government talent recruitment programs. All PPPL employees are required to disclose any participation in a foreign government talent recruitment program and may be required to withdraw from such programs to remain employed under the DOE Contract.
