The Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a full-time exempt (non-hourly) Instructor-Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner in the area of Pediatric Orthopedics to practice at Children's Hospital Colorado-Colorado Springs and the CU Briargate Specialty Clinic for Children in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This position includes membership in the CU Briargate Center, a multispecialty pediatric clinic and CU School of Medicine cost center that includes faculty from multiple departments. The position is not eligible for tenure.

This position will report to Colorado Springs physicians in the Department of Orthopedics and will primarily work as a clinical Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner, and as needed for the Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics and the Chair of the Department. 

Duties and Responsibilities

This is a position requiring interest in Pediatric Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery.   The applicant must be self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a high-intensity environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as well.

  • Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations on assigned patients; assesses and treats acute/chronic pediatric orthopedic problems (focusing on the musculoskeletal system) and provides direct patient care to a specified patient population. Writes prescriptions for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, and DME as needed. Completes FMLA and other forms and school notes as needed.  Primary places of patient care are in a hospital operating room, hospital ward, hospital emergency department, and outpatient clinic.
  • Assists in providing pre-op, intra-op and post-op care; writes appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs. There will be some casting, splinting, and dressing required.
  • Performs emergency lifesaving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies. Provides fracture reductions in ER or office as needed, but not conscious sedation. Performs joint aspirations and injections.
  • Notifies attending physician on call, house physician on call, or supervising physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic. Works with the team to ensure smooth operation of the clinic.
  • Writes progress notes on patients' office and hospital charts indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed; writes other records as required including discharge summaries and consent forms.
  • Provides health education to patients and families; may train and supervise medical students,  residents, fellows, Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner students, and other health professional students, engaged in specific clinical activities.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Participates (attends, gives talks, helps organize) in occasional educational programs of the CUSOM/CHCO Sports Medicine and orthopedic programs.
  • Will assist in community outreach events including giving educational talks, organizing, planning, and attending.
  • Assists orthopedic surgeon in operating room setting as needed.
  • Helps develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post-operative care.
  • Assists in preparing and giving PowerPoint and poster presentations for educational purposes at institutional, local and national meetings.
  • May perform clinical research related to specific conditions and assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • Must become proficient in documentation and use of current Electronic Medical Record, and be an available resource to other health care providers.
  • Will assist in and take telephone, ER and hospital call coverage in Colorado Springs.   Telephone triage of urgent patients will be a critical function.
  • Will assist with athletic training room coverage at the local university and high school level and help in coverage of athletic events at the local university and high school levels as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Flexibility required as the nature of the position will change over time as one gains knowledge and experience with sports medicine/orthopedic conditions. The expectation will be for gradually more independence in the office as confidence is gained.
Working ConditionsThe position will function at principally the Colorado Springs locations which currently include the Children’s Hospital Colorado – Colorado Springs and the CU Briargate Specialty Clinic for Children.  Responsibilities at Children’s Hospital Colorado – Colorado Springs will include initial consultation evaluation and treatment of pediatric patients seen at the request of ED staff in the Emergency and Trauma Department or other Pediatric Inpatient services, Inpatient floor management and providing assistance in the Operating Room to the practice’s supervising Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons.

Responsibilities at the CU Briargate Specialty Clinic for Children will include evaluation and treatment of pediatric orthopedic patients seen in the outpatient setting under the direction of supervising Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeons.  It is desired, that many of these patients will be known to the provider having seen them already previously in the ED or hospital.

Call responsibilities are as anticipated:  Call coverage to the Childrens Hospital Colorado – Colorado Springs will be 1:6 on average and will include being available at the request of the Emergency Department/Trauma Team and or other Pediatric Services for the evaluation and initial treatment of the pediatric patient, providing assistance to the Orthopedic Surgeon as needed for Operative and Procedural cases, and responding to any patient floor nursing staff concerns. The advanced practitioner will always be on call with a supervising Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon and will be expected to adhere to a trauma call response time of within 30 minutes of request.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $115,000 - $135,000. 

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • State of Colorado Certified Physician's Assistant or Inclusion on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry as an Advance Practice Nurse; Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

  • CPR Certified

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preferred. May be willing to train new grad with previous hospital/ortho/clinic experience or exceptional qualities.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related Technical, Scientific, or Engineering discipline.
