Professional Research Assistant

Nature of Work
The University of Colorado’s Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine, located at the Anschutz Medical Campus, is an internationally renowned program that provides comprehensive resources for the diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the digestive tract, pancreas and liver.  The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has faculty and staff making contributions to research, clinical trials, and nationally recognized patient care.  Gastroenterology & GI Surgery is one of the top ranked in the United States and our clinical partner, the University of Colorado Hospital, and is in the top hospitals nationwide as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is rapidly growing, with clinical practices throughout the state of Colorado and over 80 researchers, physicians and staff, all working toward its vision to prevent and treat disease while being a global model for patient care delivery, interdisciplinary research, and training.

As an important member of the research team, the Professional Research Assistant will support the Assistant Professor with basic science research in the topic area of “Control of Inflammatory Acidity in Mucosal Inflammation.”  This position is accountable for meeting study-specific goals and timelines, while also performing and assisting with research tasks.  This position communicates appropriately and effectively with investigators and other team members, has outstanding customer service skills, and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

 

Examples of Work Performed

  • Responsibilities include technical laboratory work related to inflammatory bowel disease including biochemical analysis, quantitative PCR, cell culture, ELISA, western blot, tissue histology, mouse handling/dissection and flow cytometry. 
  • Utilizing specialized knowledge and sophisticated research techniques examining inflammation-related signaling by intestinal epithelial cells.
  • Implementation of schedule methodology, timeline and detailed lab book maintenance.
  • Collecting, recording, analyzing, and presenting data in lab meetings.
  • Assist faculty with development and writing of research protocols.
  • Assist faculty with development and writing of manuscripts and presentations.
  • Meeting with the project Principal Investigator (Ian M. Cartwright, PhD) on a minimum weekly basis for the purpose of progress updates and mentoring and occasionally with senior faculty members.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $35,600 to $43,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

    Laboratory Research experience (Mucosal biology or immunology research experience is a plus).Experience with mouse handling, drug delivery techniques, and dissection of relevant gastroenterology tissues.Experience with molecular biology techniques.Experience with cell/tissue culture.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.Outstanding customer service and patient relations skills.Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.Excellent organizational skills, ability to problem-solve, multi-task, and work independently.Excellent attention to detail.Ability to interpret and comprehend complex research protocol information.Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office products.Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and murine equivalents.Availability to work occasional weekends.
