Assistant Director, Disability Support Services

The University of North Alabama is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director of Disability Support Services in the division of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion.  This position is responsible for establishing student disability status and eligibility for accommodations, reviewing disability documentation, establishing accommodation plans, coordinating services, and providing advice, advocacy, and referrals to students. Additionally, this position has overall responsibility for coordination, implementation, and provision of all services necessary to provide accommodations for students with disabilities under the mandates of section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), state of Alabama, and university policies and procedures.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Develop, monitor, adjust, and evaluate individual accommodation plans for students with disabilities based on individual assessments, documentation, needs and abilities;
  • Conduct thorough intake interviews and psychosocial assessments;
  • Review and consult with appropriate professionals regarding confidential psychological, educational, and/or medical evaluations and maintain confidential medical records;
  • Assist in determining eligibility for services by evaluating documentation in coordination with supervisor as related to disability;
  • Present information about departmental services to current students as well as to prospective students at SOAR;
  • Act as a service coordinator and liaison for on- and off-campus service providers for students with disabilities;
  • Participate with various campus departments to develop programs to improve retention and inclusion of students with disabilities;
  • Design and implement policies, programs, and services that empower students with disabilities to equitably participate;
  • Assist in development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures;
  • Assist in departmental strategic planning and development of annual goals and objectives;
  • Assist with the alternative testing program by proctoring test/exams for students with disabilities;
  • Ensure availability and serviceability of current adaptive/assistive technologies, alternate text formats, and equipment needs for current case load;
  • Assist with ensuring that the University is in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act as well as Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree in Special Education, Social Work, Counseling, Disability Services, or a closely-related field, is preferred; Two years of experience working with a diverse student body with documented disabilities is required; Five years of experience in Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Psychology, Higher Education Administration, or a related field is preferred; A minimum of two years of experience working with students with disabilities in a higher education setting is preferred; Experience with assistive technology preferred.
