Your opportunity:

The Institute for Gender and the Economy (GATE) at the Rotman School of Management promotes an understanding of gender inequalities and how they can be remedied - by people of all genders - in the world of business and, more broadly, in the economy. The Institute builds on a foundation of research: to advance our understanding of the dynamics of gender in the economy; to achieve impact using innovative approaches to translate and disseminate research on gender in the economy, business, finance and entrepreneurship to practitioners in order to support changein their practices; and, to train today’s leaders and prepare future leaders to use gender analysis to uncover career and investment opportunities in finance and business.

As the Digital Storyteller, you will be responsible for the planning, development, standardization, content generation, and analysis of GATE’s web, print and social media environments to enhance the Institute’s public reach and reputation. You will also be responsible for advising GATE’s leadership team on strategic approaches to communications, marketing, and branding to further GATE’s mission and increase impact amongst the institutes’ various stakeholders.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing digital communication plans across a broad range of marketing/communication channels
  • Advising and implementing best practices and strategies to maximize digital communication initiatives
  • Determining the logistics required for, and overseeing tasks related to, the drafting, production and dissemination of marketing/communication materials (including audio and video content)
  • Producing promotional and outreach materials
  • Advising on strategies to align websites with marketing/communication objectives
  • Implementing social media campaigns and advising on strategies to maximize social media presence and growth
  • Analyzing the effectiveness of campaigns and/or programs using metrics

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications or Journalism or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum four years of relevant, recent experience in journalism or digital publishing (print, digital or television)
  • Experience with writing and editing for digital communications preferably within a higher education environment
  • Experience with gathering relevant information for web and social media purposes, measurements, and client services
  • Proven track record of recommending ideas and implementing communication plans for both internal and external audiences
  • Demonstrated experience and impact in using images, video, and podcasting for web, print, and social media
  • Must have experience successfully maintaining and executing a variety of web, print and social media assignments from conceptual stages through delivery and follow-up evaluation
  • Advanced video and audio recordingand editing experience is required
  • Conceptual and working knowledge of the full Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Soundcloud and Mailchimp is required
  • Knowledge of the academic research process and the ability to read and interpret academic research for a lay audience
  • Must have superior communication skills (oral and written); demonstrated writing skills for various formats, both print and web, with outstanding copyediting and proofreading skills
  • Must have good editing and project management skills and have a strong understanding of content marketing best practices, trends, and innovations
  • Solid interpersonal skills and an ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment; strong public-service orientation and evidence of effective teamwork are required
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and carry out projects of varying complexity for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to develop and share technological expertise
  • A self-starter with a passion for gender equity and driving social change
  • Must have an eye for design and a passion for digital communications and the ability to effectively steward GATE's positioning and brand through its digital and print channels
  • Creative, resourceful and solutions-oriented; able to manage priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines; strong organizational skills and highly developed relationship management skills


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience developing and implementing online course offerings
  • Experience supervising volunteers
  • Knowledge of mechanics for publishing and management (i.e. search engine optimization and driving social media reach), and editorial production experience
  • Knowledge of gamification principles and applications for web-based platforms
