Departmental Objective:

The Freeman Center is the focal point for Christopher Newport University’s indoor sport, recreation and health and wellness services along with providing a place for the university community to meet and for students to perform. The goal for this facility is to offer a quality “indoor” venue for athletic teams during Conference and NCAA competition, support the personal development and well-being of the members of the University community, and expand the reach of the University to the local, regional and National spotlight.

Purpose of the Position:

This position will ensure the cleanliness of assigned areas by performing various housekeeping duties. It will also oversee the work of assigned housekeeping workers. Additionally, this position will assist in maintaining inventory and distribution of supplies.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) and/or Competencies required and preferred:

Required:

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to direct work assignments

Basic computer skills

Thorough knowledge of cleaning methods and cleaning supplies

Skilled in the use of housekeeping equipment such as vacuum cleaner, buffers and scrubber machines

Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs., tolerate frequent bending, stooping and climbing stairs

Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Ability to communicate effectively and to maintain positive relations with faculty, staff and students

Ability to work 2nd shift hours

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required :

Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Experience Required: Previous supervisory experience. Experience in performing housekeeping work. Experience using a computer. Experience using various types of housekeeping equipment.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Preferred :

Preferred Experience: Demonstrated experience working in a college/university setting. Experience in supervision of housekeeping/janitorial personnel. Experience in training personnel. Experience using machine and chemicals to clean, shampoo, strip and wax floors.

Starting at $24,000

Conditions of Employment:

This is a classified position. New and returning classified employees are required to complete a 12-month probationary period;

This position includes Commonwealth of Virginia and CNU employee benefits;

Selected candidate must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs., tolerate frequent bending, stooping, and climbing stairs;

Selected candidate must have the ability to work 2nd shift hours ;

Selected candidate must attend 2-day New Employee Orientation Program.
