Position SummaryTHIS POSITION IS OPEN TO SDSU EMPLOYEES ONLYThe mission of SDSU Student Health Services is to provide high quality, convenient, student focused medical care in a safe and welcoming environment, actively partnering with our patients to help them achieve and maintain healthy lives in support of their personal and academic success.The Registered Nurse II, under the general supervision of the Nursing Manager of SHS, performs direct nursing care and health maintenance according to the scope of practice of Registered Nurses in SHS. The incumbent will perform general and specialized nursing functions and some administrative functions requiring the application of highly specialized skills and knowledge acquired through advanced training, education, and practice in a specialty area, such as family planning or nutrition, approved and/or specified by a physician.The Registered Nurse II provides standard nursing care duties including following established procedures and protocols that require observing, interpreting, recording and reporting patients’ symptoms, reactions and behaviors. This work includes the following: performing phone and face-to-face triage of patients with simple to complex presentations using computer-based and paper protocols to develop a nursing diagnosis, formulating and implementing a nursing care plan for more complex cases; counseling and educating patients and staffing a Nurse Clinic for patient assessment and treatment under established protocols and standardized procedures for specific conditions. Incumbents will also assist in the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures. Nurses will also work with Physicians and Nurse Practitioners within the clinic to provide disease prevention and restorative measures including administering medications and therapeutic agents for patients with higher acuity problems such as exacerbations of asthma, acute abdominal pain, and injuries as ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner and according to established policies and procedures. The incumbent will also assist in special immunization or testing programs in response to the needs of the campus or the community.Incumbents exercise more independent judgment and discretion in determining patient needs, planning and modifying nursing care, and applying nursing treatments and often assist providers in administrative functions such as implementation of services, policies, and procedures and committee work.For more information regarding Student Health Services, click here.Intermittent-hourly position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2022, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Work schedule to be arranged based on operational needs.Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent.Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.Additionally, one year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.Licenses and/or Certifications Required Possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California and certification in CPR/AED. Preferred Qualifications One-year professional nursing experience using protocols for triaging patients by telephone.One-year professional nursing experience in splinting and/or casting.One-year professional nursing experience administering adult immunizations.One-year professional nursing in allergy immunotherapy, performing audiometry, and pulmonary function testing.One-year professional nursing experience working in an ambulatory health clinic setting.One-year professional nursing experience working in a university student health center.Two years of professional nursing specialty experience in urgent care or emergency room.Two years of professional nursing experience in an ambulatory setting with increasing clinical responsibility and independent practice such as in a nurse clinic.Possess patient teaching skills for common college health problems such as, but not limited to, self-care education of common ailments, nutrition counseling, diabetes and asthma counseling smoking cessation counseling, STD prevention, and substance abuse.Specialized SkillsAbility to work cooperatively in a team setting with good interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to perform triage and handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with speed, accuracy and diplomacy.Skills required to administer intravenous therapy, therapeutic injections, and nebulizer use; managing minor trauma including wound care, burn care and suture removal; performing ECGs and basic physical assessment.Computer skills in both practice management and electronic health records. Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $43.14 per hour. CSU Classification Salary Range: $19.92 - $84.86 per hour. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.This salary range is inclusive of the CSU/CSUEU collective bargaining agreement (CBA) provision that per diem employees hired on an hourly/intermittent basis receive an additional 29% above the regular hourly base rate.Supplemental InformationInitial review of the required application materials, including cover letters and resumes, will begin on June 24, 2021.
