Orientation Assistant for International Students

Job Description/Duties:

The Orientation Assistant for International Students (OA), together with the Orientation Coordinator, will be responsible for helping approximately 30-35 new international students adjust to our campus, Cortland community, and culture by creating a welcoming and informative environment during the week prior to the beginning of the semester. The OA must be fully available during the entire orientation period (including one day before for preparation): August 17 – 29, 2021. The OA will not be able to hold any additional employment during this time period.

•The OA will be required to drive a 12 or a 7- passenger SUNY Cortland van or accompany the coordinator or SUNY Cortland transportation provider to the Syracuse or Ithaca airports to welcome students.
•The OA will accompany and aid the students on shopping trips to local stores.
•The OA will help the new students become familiar with the campus, including setting up telephones, Wi-Fi, obtaining their college IDs, providing informing on student support services, visiting the library, locating bus stops and other important campus locations, and learning the campus procedures.
•The OA will also be required to help students move into their housing and take students to SUNY Cortland Orientation Week sessions, evening events and meals.
•After orientation the OA will be required to provide written feedback to the Orientation Coordinator reflecting on the International Student Welcome Week.
•All the activities and some of the meals are included during orientation week. If needed, we can provide housing during the orientation week. Students that are residing on-campus in the Fall, might be able to move in early into their room/apartment.

Required Qualifications:

1. The student must have a NY State Driver’s License.
2. The student must be available August 17-29, 2021

Preferred Qualifications:

The candidate must be a mature internationally-minded undergraduate or graduate student with an appreciation for, and commitment to, diversity. The candidate must be in good academic and judicial standing.

Preference will be given to candidates who are eligible to drive a NYS van. For more information about van training and student driver application process, please go to:
