Research Technician - Georgetown University Medical Center

Job description

Research Technician - Georgetown University Medical Center

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

The work performed by this position is directly related to the research mission of the University. In fact, it is funded by research funds from the National Institutes of Health. The Research Technician will contribute to future applications for more funds to support research. The Rebeck lab has been successful at receiving these funds, and continued success requires hiring the individuals to perform the supported research.

There are two main functions for this position:

  • First, the individual will be responsible for performing research that is funded through NIH grants related to Alzheimer's disease and chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment. This research requires “wet lab” skills, such as cell culture, and protein and RNA analyses. In addition, it may require work with laboratory animals, for behavioral assays and collecting tissues. It requires working closely with current lab personnel, as well as working independently for some aspects of the position.
  • Second, his research technician position is needed to complete lab duties not directly related to laboratory research. These duties include ordering lab supplies, taking care of common lab duties, organizing lab members for meetings, and overseeing regulatory requirements.

Work Interactions

The Research Technician may aid in the research of other labs at Georgetown through existing or nascent collaborations, but the main goals will be limited to Rebeck lab aims.

  • The position requires someone with a bachelor's degree (and perhaps a master's degree) to perform the necessary work.
  • Some practical lab experience is useful, but most of the skills can be taught by current lab members.
