Location: Main Campus
Open Date: May 11, 2021
Deadline: Jul 19, 2021 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description
CSET is currently seeking Research Fellow candidates to focus on the safety and risk of deployed AI systems. Specifically, the Fellow would research real-world AI incidents and use these identified incidents with other analyses of AI systems to inform policy recommendations regarding AI safety, test, evaluation, verification and validation (TEV&V) processes, standards setting and management, and the appropriate employment and operation of AI systems by businesses and the US Government (including the military).

The ideal candidate understands AI algorithms enough to digest AI/ML research literature in order to identify policy relevant insights. Successful candidates have familiarity with failure modes of various AI models in real-world situations, including those in which AI systems may be actively attacked (e.g., data poisoning, adversarial images, etc). The ideal candidate also has experience working on the research, development and engineering of technology solutions and/or real world testing and evaluation of complex systems, as well as experience in US Government agencies.

CSET Research Fellows apply their varied experience and expertise to challenging policy questions at the intersection of national security and emerging technology. Comfortable working with empirical data and evidence to support policy recommendations, they are expected to lead research projects, brief policymakers, participate in public events, and manage and mentor CSET's Research Analysts, Research Assistants, and student affiliates. They are also expected to work closely with CSET's data scientists to conduct empirical analyses. Generally, Research Fellows are less than 10 years out of graduate school (MA, PhD or JD) programs and are encouraged to enter public service at the conclusion of their fellowship.

CSET's Commitment to Fellows
As part of CSET's mission to develop the next generation of decision-makers, Research Fellows will have opportunities to lead significant research projects, manage teams, brief government officials; interact with the media; collaborate with internal and external research partners; engage with policymakers and other stakeholders in government and the private sector; and contribute meaningfully to CSET's research agenda and development as an organization. Research Fellows gain exposure to government and other public service career options; and develop people management competencies. CSET is dedicated to providing full support to our staff through tailored professional development opportunities, flexible work arrangements and career coaching.

Responsibilities
Developing, proposing, and leading research projects related to CSET's mission, both individually and in collaboration with other Research Fellows, Research Analysts, Data Research Analysts, Data Scientists, Senior Fellows and Center leadership

Conducting the analyses necessary to execute those research projects individually or as leader of a project team of researchers and data scientists.

Producing written publications, both individually and as a coauthor

Supervising and mentoring Research Analysts and student affiliates

Developing and delivering presentations and briefs for policy-making audiences on topics related to emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced computing.

Collaborating with Data Scientists and Translators in building out the Center's data and document libraries

Monitoring trends and developments in AI, computing, and national security policy

Contributing to CSET's organizational development, including by actively contributing to internal working groups, seminars, and discussions; and by supporting and mentoring colleagues
