Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is seeking applicants for the adjunct position of Jazz Band Director on the Alexandria Campus. Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the job is essential. The teaching load is one credit and pay is based on experience but is reflective of one teaching credit.

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.
Duties include but are not limited to…
•directing the NOVA Nighthawks Jazz Ensemble in weekly rehearsals and 2 concerts per semester (starting Aug. 23, 2021)
•programming music
•recruiting individuals to balance out sections as needed
•hiring guest artists if needed/wanted
•holding one office hour per week on campus
•being available to students and colleagues through a college email address
•completing an annual online training course that takes about 2 hours to complete
•working with the Concert Band Director to schedule concert dates, purchase music, and hire guest artists

Special Assignments:

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications:

•Master’s degree and at least 18 credits in music
•Music background with a strong jazz specialization
•Successful previous experience leading a big band jazz ensemble
•Excellent communication and social skills
•Ability to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the job

Preferred Qualifications:

•K-12 and/or college jazz big band directing experience

Additional Information:

The NOVA Nighthawks Jazz Ensemble is comprised of about 20-30 members, both college students and community members. The band functions through a NOVA course that members register for every semester. Rehearsals are on Monday nights from 7:00-9:55pm in a beautiful new (3-year old) rehearsal and recital hall. The music instrument storage room is adjacent. There is a jazz sheet music library and a complement of instruments on campus including Steinway pianos, a jazz drum set, an upright bass, and amps.

The ensemble performs one concert per semester in the beautiful Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall on campus. This is a world-class performance hall where many of the D.C. military bands often perform and record. The ensemble usually performs at least one other concert in the community per semester. Examples of previous venues include the Art of the Avenue outdoor festival and the Torpedo Factory Art Center, both in Alexandria.
