Position Summary

The PRL is a research institute primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Michigan State University. The PRL’s mission is to discover how photosynthetic organisms work on the molecular level in order, ultimately, to develop technologies that improve human lives. For the PRL, the position is responsible for communicating notable news—such as new research publications, grants, or faculty/staff awards—to the DOE and selected scientifically interested audiences; maintaining and enhancing the institute’s branding strategy and related communication plans; and maintaining the PRL website. In addition, the CM-I is responsible for producing creative materials (e.g., press releases, audiovisual products, web content, reports), providing editing support to the PRL director, and creating other written products as the need arises.

The Molecular Plant Sciences Graduate Program is a dual major leading to the Ph.D. degree. For the MPS program, the CM-I is responsible for promoting student success stories, supporting the program director with recruitment efforts, maintaining the MPS website, and helping students promote the Association of Molecular Plant Science Students and its related activities.

The CM-I will be housed in the PRL-office suite and work closely with the PRL and MPS directors, in addition to faculty, students, and postdoctoral researchers in both units to stay current with ongoing research and community initiatives. In addition, the CM-I will interact with campus communications leaders, including at the College of Natural Science and MSU Communications, to keep track of promotion and marketing programs.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations; composing, editing and publication production; news, broadcasting, and print media; and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design (HTML and CSS); presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation or radio production; or computer programming/technology; and/or experience in a field related to area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in marketing, advertising, public relations, journalism, telecommunications, or related field.

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Familiarity with content management systems and technical web development knowledge (HTML, CSS, and some JavaScript).
  • Interest in scientific topics related to the mission of the PRL and MPS program.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize and summarize complex information and communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Initiative, good judgement and the ability to own projects and manage multiple assignments.
  • Experience with branding and marketing strategy concepts and terminology.
