Position Summary

The Communications Manager will work in collaboration with the entire University Communications team to advance internal, executive and project communications.

The role includes the design, planning and implementation of executive communications content, channels, desired impacts and measurement goals. Working directly for the Director of Internal and Executive Communications, this position will support the development and implementation of communications and thought leadership strategies, including social, innovative and digital solutions for engagement and national visibility for Michigan State University.

This position will directly integrate and support programs and initiatives that are presidential, university communications driven or other priorities and will work to build a collaborative and open culture within University Communications and across the institution. Specifically, this position will be responsible for identifying and building storytelling frameworks, developing and maintaining active executive speaking opportunities for at local, state and national speaking events. The role will include overseeing strategy, content and measurement of key channels. Tactically, this position will develop and update the president’s webpage ensuring the content is current and refreshed, manage the video and photo support process, including coordination and approvals, writing and editing support, social media and help on all special projects, including research benchmarking and program management responsibility.

Additionally, the role requires the ability to independently conceptualize, formulate, and maintain both comprehensive and micro-targeted communications campaigns; create and organize conceptual ideas and write and edit content for communications materials including printed publications, electronic media, social channels and other promotional vehicles; and form productive, collaborate relationships with coworkers and colleagues in various offices across the university.


  • Supports development of and implementation of a comprehensive communications plan, and ensure alignment, accuracy and timelines for key leaders’ communications (i.e. presentations, events, social content and messaging).
  • Oversees content strategy, planning, posting and measurement of social and digital media presence for the president, assessing the platforms and recommending adaption and/or expansion.
  • Ensures, in all instances, accurate, timely and appropriate communications.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Knowledge of content management systems, content production, and web management systems.
  • Be the conduit to the MI Spartan Impact program and provide occasional communications support to Government Relations and other units.

Communications/Interpersonal Relationships

Interacts with:

  • Media and Social University Communications Representatives - in order to suggest news and feature stories, answer inquiries, social content, campaigns and schedules.
  • Artists/Photographers/Program Leaders - in order to coordinate production of publication materials.
  • Faculty/Staff/Specialists/Government Relations - in order to exchange information and use as sources for news and publication stories.
  • Supervisor - in order to seek advice and approval and receive direction.

    This position reports to the Director of Internal and Executive Communications.

    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations; composing, editing and publication production; news, broadcasting, and print media; and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation or radio production; or computer programming/technology; and/or experience in a field related to are of employment; may require management and supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Desired Qualifications

    The successful candidate will have:

    • At least five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public relations or agency environment or a large, complex organization; or an equivalent combination of experience.
    • Excellent editorial and visual content judgement; demonstrated ability to communicate to identified audiences.
    • Enthusiastic about being part of a higher education communications environment.
    • Flexible, collaborator with the ability to effectively manage multiple workstreams while also possessing the ability to quickly and appropriately react to changing circumstances or priorities.
    • Able to be strategic and detail oriented.
    • Able to lead multiple projects, ensuring seamless execution and quality in a fast-paced environment.
    • Proactively offers solutions that improve current processes; constantly working to improve efficiency and productivity.
