Position Summary
  • Provides independent general (first level) diagnostic support to people at the laboratory for a broad range of technical areas, including IT associated with scientific computing, experimental devices and machine controls. Resolves routine problems or questions and refers more complex issues to a more appropriate source. Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Helpdesk triage
  • Create, modify and delete users, contacts, email accounts, distribution lists and other related items.
  • Troubleshoot server connectivity
  • Configuration and monitoring of servers and storage devices
  • Coordinate and execute upgrades to network software and hardware
  • Independently works with people at the laboratory to analyze problems or needs, and develops solutions drawing on a high level of expertise in position's assigned technical area to solve problems requiring novel uses of existing technology.
  • Trains and reviews the work of student staff members in areas related to their assigned projects, develops new staff procedures in technical areas of expertise, and provides related technical support to the team.
  • Coordinates laboratory desktop software application installations and upgrades
  • Manages laboratory software licenses and ensures compliance with all licensing requirements
  • Coordinates laboratory computer and printer deployments, updates, and upgrades
  • Maintains inventory of physical IT assets, including computer and telephony hardware
  • Maintains stock of common items for distribution to people at the laboratory
  • Supports the laboratory AV/VC functions
  • Supports the laboratory’s Voice over IP phone system
  • Provides general IT support to the laboratory
  • Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
    • Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical, vocational or business school such as an Associate’s Degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment;
    • one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Must be able to work with export controlled technologies.
    • Technical knowledge of and experience with:
    • Windows Server
    • Microsoft Active Directory
    • Linux Hypervisor
    • Shell scripting, automation/scheduling concepts, hardware components and internals
    • Redhat and Debian Linux OS
    • Server build and configuration
