The Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education (SCOPE) fosters research, policy, and practice to advance high-quality, equitable education systems in the United States and internationally. Historically, SCOPE has engaged in research at the intersection of policy and practice and has developed authentic relationships with educators, organizations, and policymaker to address pressing problems of equity, opportunity, and quality in education.

Faculty Director Dr. Alfredo Artiles is leading SCOPE to develop the next generation of scholarship on opportunity research, policies, and practices. He will lead work situated in an interdisciplinary vision of opportunity by engaging multiple stakeholders and audiences and by mobilizing research knowledge to impact policy and practice. Under his leadership, SCOPE strives to enhance conceptual clarity in the study of opportunity. A central theme in future research is the notion of “student competence” framed through an opportunity lens. The goal is to expand how the field views competence and produce comparative studies across contexts and subgroups of students (e.g., low-income learners, students with disabilities, English learners). In addition, the Center’s new agenda will implement public knowledge initiatives directed at informing policy and civic discourses on educational equity and opportunity grounded in cutting edge interdisciplinary scholarship. SCOPE will continue to expand its community of collaborators at the local, state, national and international levels to include interdisciplinary and intersectoral expertise. SCOPE aspires toward a culture of mentoring and inter-generational learning as a way to develop future scholars focused on opportunity research.

What You’ll Do:

The administrative assistant will provide a range of administrative supports to Dr. Artiles to help move the work of the center forward and, ideally, will be a creative problem-solver. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills (written and oral), enjoy interacting with people, and assisting in the crafting of communications including the preparation of presentations. Typical communication tasks will include managing a book series and blog, drafting correspondences with authors, communicating with faculty, researchers, and other SCOPE collaborators, and copyediting papers, reports and other communications. In addition to these essential communication responsibilities, the administrative assistant will help with the operation of the center: coordinate programs, organize and help plan SCOPE events, arrange logistics, manage timelines, oversee program budgets, and handle reimbursements and vendor payments.

Core duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Act on behalf of the supervisors with regard to establishing priorities and identifying and resolving problems that are administrative in nature.
  • Oversee and perform duties associated with scheduling, organizing, and operating complex conferences, seminars, and events, including arranging with vendors for services, overseeing the production and distribution of materials, administering logistics, and managing event within budgets.
  • Compose and draft documents and correspondence for presentations, course handouts, grants, conferences, seminars, and reports; perform substantial editing and fact checking. Create, maintain, modify, and/or ensure accuracy of content in various unit documents, displays, reports, brochures, social media, and/or websites.
  • Plan and schedule calendar(s) with limited consultation, resolve calendaring conflicts, and arrange travel in compliance with unit, university, and sponsor policies.
  • Create complex reports and spreadsheets which may utilize specialized software and systems.
  • Oversee and/or process a variety of complex financial transactions; produce, monitor, and reconcile budget statements; research, identify, and resolve discrepancies. May assist with capital or special equipment requests and/or vendor selection.
  • Coordinate and monitor routine maintenance services completion. Plan and coordinate office moves and/or minor renovation projects.
  • May lead staff or supervise day-to-day work of student and/or temporary workers, including scheduling, assigning, and prioritizing workloads, setting appropriate deadlines, reviewing work for quality and timeliness, and providing performance review input.

Education & Experience:

High school diploma and four years of administrative experience (Bachelor’s Degree preferred) or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) are a requirement.
  • Very strong interpersonal skills and a customer-service orientation.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines and project plans with short- and long-term end dates. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated success in following through and completing projects.
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects, while still being open to new and creative solutions.
  • Advanced computer skills with a working knowledge of applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project Management Software.
  • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
