Job Description
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking an Assistant Dean for Development.  This position will report to the Associate Dean for Development, plans, implements, and evaluates the fundraising strategy for the major capital campaign, with emphasis on major gifts and development-related events.  In conjunction with the Associate Dean, this position sets up fundraising goals and determines strategies for constituency based fundraising efforts.  In addition, this position is responsible for managing and supervising the Development Officers at the department level and works in partnership with each of them and other personnel to promote the School of Medicine as a whole and strengthen alumnities.
The Assistant Dean for Development participates in strategic planning for the Office of Development, and implements programs for achieving annual and multi-year fundraising objectives.  This position directs and supervises fundraising activities including major capital and planned gift programs.  He/she serves as an ambassador to major donors.  The Assistant Dean oversees both fundraising and donor cultivation activities, assuring that they are coordinated and meet objectives of a comprehensive development strategy.
The Assistant Dean works closely with the Associate Dean for Development to define priorities for the Dean's involvement in the school's fundraising efforts. He/she interacts and collaborates with department chairs and directors of programs, centers, and institutes in order to gain their involvement in fund raising activities and build a culture of philanthropy in the SOM.  The Assistant Dean identifies researches, develops, and assures strong relationships with current and prospective donors of the School, and creates opportunities for them to participate in the School's various programs and activities.
The Assistant Dean manages a portfolio of major gift prospects and produces gifts, in addition to managing and mentoring major gift officers.  He/she is also responsible for creating reporting mechanisms to measure fund raising effectiveness.

Program and Staff Management –
  • Manage the School of Medicine’s development efforts in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Development, School of Medicine leadership, faculty, and other key University and School of Medicine staff.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive and detailed level of knowledge of the objectives for the School of Medicine and effectively communicate those objectives, and methods of reaching the objectives, to Office of Development.
  • Oversee staff development and strategic staff growth, including the hiring, training, performance management and coaching of major gift officers and support staff.
  • Work with Office of Development leadership to provide budget planning and oversight for the advancement program.
Leadership –

  • Participates with the Associate Dean for Development and other leaders of the School of Medicine in guiding the strategic direction of the Office of Development.  Acts as an ambassador for the Office of Development and the Dean’s Office.
  • Develops recommendations for future growth of the Office of Development.
Development Activities –

  • Provides leadership and strategic planning direction for major gift efforts to ensure that prospect qualification, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities are seamlessly integrated.  Work with University, School, Alumni Association, and Medical Center leadership to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Maintains responsibility for a major gift portfolio of approximately 50 leadership gift prospects.  Utilize knowledge of alternative giving methods such as deferred giving, non-cash gifts, and tax-driven gifts.
  • This position assists in the solicitation of gifts, including the drafting of individual and foundation proposals.
  • Supervise a major gifts team, which works with a diverse group of constituents including alumni, friends, grateful patients, corporations and foundations.  Provide ongoing strategic insight and guidance for major gift solicitations.
Faculty/Staff Development Liaison –

  • Support the Associate Dean for Development through cultivation of long term, collaborative, strategic relationships with department chairs, program, center, and institute directors, and other institutional leaders.  Serve as a primary liaison with department chairs and program, center, and institute directors on all development-related matters.
  • Works with department chairs and program, center and institute directors to establish annual departmental development plans and create performance measures for major gift officers.
  • Lead School-wide and department-specific development training sessions for faculty and staff with the ultimate goal of fostering an enhanced institution-wide culture of philanthropy.
  • Meets regularly with department, program, center, and institute leaders to ensure that institutional fundraising goals and strategies are being pursued.
  • Engage and train faculty and staff to interact effectively with potential donors and volunteers to achieve critical School of Medicine initiatives.
Campaign Planning and Operations –

  • Participates in the planning and creation of a comprehensive campaign that effectively utilizes the skills and talents the major gift officers as well as the staff members in Campaign Operations, Development Services, Special Events and Board Relations.
  • Provides leadership and participate as necessary in various aspects of the School of Medicine campaign planning, feasibility assessment, case development, and implementation.
  • Works with Major Gift Officers individually and as a team to develop cultivation and solicitation strategies that support campaign goals.
Board Support –

  • Assists the Associate Dean for Development with the management and support of the School of Medicine Board of Visitors.  Assists with the recruitment, activities, and training of volunteers as needed to support fund-raising activities, including the capital campaign cabinet and the school's Board of Visitors, to maximize volunteer engagement and giving.


Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree required with a preference for an advanced degree.
Experience: Ten (10) or more years of broad based related experience spent progressively building a background in the various functions of development and alumni relations, with at least 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience.
Development experience in higher education or other complex organization(s).
Financial disclosure reporting required by State of Maryland Ethics Commission.
The preferred candidate will have:
    Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to think/plan strategically. Enthusiasm for fundraising in a comprehensive research university setting and a demonstrated record of significant fundraising. Exceptional written and oral communications skills in order to develop relationships with donors. Exceptional interpersonal skills, high energy, drive, integrity, and sincerity. Ability to work efficiently on multiple assignments involving staff, faculty, volunteers, and donors. Desire to work collegially within a goal-oriented fundraising organization. Capital campaign experience. Capacity to work effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment and to interact successfully with high-level medical and business leaders. Maturity, integrity, and the capacity to inspire professional colleagues.
