Fire Protection Specialist – Environmental Health and Safety

The University of Tennessee Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking Fire and Life Safety Specialist for the Knoxville campus.


The safety specialist’s primary responsibility is monthly inspections for identification of fire and life safety hazards within university buildings.  This person will also work closely with other members of the Fire & Life Safety team to perform annual certifications, fire extinguisher inspections, fire drills, fire safety audits, fire awareness communication and fire safety training events on campus.  The fire safety specialist must be comfortable reading and interpreting fire code (IBC) and building blueprints. This person will also have other general duties as assigned by the Fire & Life Safety Program Leader (PL) or Director of EHS as needed.

Other Responsibilities include:

    Routinely assess program key performance indicators (KPIs) to align performance goals Assist in reviews and auditing of campus permit programs (i.e. Impairment & Hot Work)Assist PL in management of data and records associated with assigned programs Assist in validation of the university’s Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAP) Assist with the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program. Conduct risk assessments of buildings, operations, and special events Identify outreach opportunities and engage with the university community Serve as team lead in responding to fire, smoke, and alarm conditions Assist other EHS staff and provide services to other EHS programs as needed.


Requires High school diploma or equivalent, four years’ experience in fire safety, law enforcement and/or emergency management.  An associate degree or vocational or technical training in Occupational Safety and Health, Fire Science, or a related discipline is preferred; four years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers. Position requires a thorough understanding of fire and life safety practices, codes (state; international) and standards (NFPA) along with general knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations (OSHA). Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences. Ability to write incident reports and technical documents required. Basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook calendar/email.

Valid TN Driver’s license required. Certification in a Fire and Life Safety technical area preferred (i.e. Certified Fire Protection Specialist).

Extensive walking, climbing of stairs and fixed-ladders on a daily basis is required for this position. The candidate must be capable of lifting/carrying containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
